Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 5

Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 5 is the latest test release of the upcoming 3.0 version of Firefox. With tons of new features, security enhancements, performance upgrades and more, it's one of the most widely-anticipated releases this year. And, thanks to the PortableApps.com packaging, you can try out all the new features without impacting your locally-installed copy of Firefox. For more on what's new, read the Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 5 Release Notes.

New In This Release

This release updates Firefox to 3 Beta 5 (release notes) and has an improved launcher that has fixes for minor bugs with default settings and live mode.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

How do you get these out so fast after release? I'd hardly finished reading the /. blurb and here it is on this site, ready for me to install!

Thanks Smile

Well, he probably doesn't have to update the launcher. Firefox 3 is largely just going to be getting bug fixes until the final release, so there really won't be a need to change the launcher at all. Thus all John has to do is install a copy of the newest beta and copy it into the App\firefox folder, then change the launcher text for the version number, recompile and release.

Signature automatically removed for being too awesome.

It's correct that you can edit the max version number, but sometimes that doesn't work.

The easiest way to get allowed to install your add-ons is by making these modifications to about:config (type about:config in location bar, hit ENTER):

Make a new boolean called 'extensions.checkUpdateSecurity' and set it to 'false'
also:
Make a new boolean called 'extensions.checkCompatibility' and set it to 'false'

Be sure to remember the 's' in extensions Wink

Is it possible to get the launcher to pass on the command line arguments to Firefox? The one I am most interested in at the moment is -app, which allows you to run xulrunner applications. At the moment it seems to swallow arguments starting with - (so urls will get through, but others won't).

Thanks.

For future reference, support topics should be posted in the forums please.

Firefox Portable supports command line options through FirefoxPortable.ini when placed in the same directory as FirefoxPortable.exe using the ini file in Other\Source. More about this file can be read from the Other\Source\Readme.txt.

Also, please be sure to search the forums, as well as the Firefox Portable support pages first.

Thanks!

When I try to open it on Vista, it comes up that Firefox has stopped working and needs to close. Tried it twice, and twice it happened.

To all those posting support questions and bugs on this thread, please post them in the forums as this is a news story and not meant for these types of questions.

Thanks.

Because you're reviving a topic that's over a year old and the 3 Beta 5 release has been LONG since replaced by the official 3.0 release (and then 3.0.1, 3.0.2, etc). The test page is now used for the current test, which is for 3.1.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
