New In Firefox 3.6

Firefox 3.6 is built on Mozilla's Gecko 1.9.2 web rendering platform, which has been under development since early 2009 and contains many improvements for web developers, add-on developers, and users. This version is also faster and more responsive than previous versions.

  • Support for a new type of theme called Personas, which allow users to change Firefox's appearance with a single click.
  • Protection from out-of-date plugins to keep users safer as they browse.
  • Open, native video can now be displayed full screen and supports poster frames.
  • Improved JavaScript performance, overall browser responsiveness, and startup time.
  • The ability for web developers to indicate that scripts should run asynchronously to speed up page load times.
  • Continued support for downloadable web fonts using the new WOFF font format.
  • Support for new CSS attributes such as gradients, background sizing, and pointer events.
  • Support for new DOM and HTML5 specifications including the Drag & Drop API and the File API, which allow for more interactive web pages.
  • Changes to how third-party software can integrate with Firefox in order to prevent crashes.

Auto-Update Issue

If you allow Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition to auto-update, some non-personal files may remain on the local PC. This will be addressed in a later release.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

I'm having problems where when I click the star, it just adds it automatically and doesn't open the queue where I can change where I want it to be saved. Help!

When you click on the (white) bookmark-star once, it turns yellow (it added a bookmark to default location). Then click AGAIN on the (now) yellow bookmark-star and it will prompt you to edit that bookmark. That's how it worked in the last few editions as well, so it's nothing new... I've just tested on both "FirefoxPortable 3.6" and on "FirefoxPortable 3.6.2", and it's exactly the same.

Take care Smile

Sorry, I can't help you then. It's working as supposed to for me... Maybe if you provided more info, but then again I don't even know what info would be necessary to troubleshoot this problem. Maybe someone else knows the answer? Oh, and FYI, John doesn't like when the Release pages (News feed or whatever it's called) is filled with problems or bug-reports. He always redirected people to post a question/problem/bug report in the forums, under that app's support forum.

Take care

If you follow standard troubleshooting procedures for Firefox (or FirefoxPortable) you'll either start in safe mode (which is hard/impossible for FirefoxPortable) or you can temporarily disable all add-ons. Restart and see what happens.

I'll bet that you'll be able to isolate the issue that way.

It's just as easy to start Firefox Portable in safe mode as it is Firefox. Just run FirefoxPortable.exe -safe-mode from the command line.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I've also come to appreciate your view to keep things as clean and uncomplicated as we can when giving advice or recommendations. (Thanks, honestly.)

As an old DOS guy, the command line works fine for me. I'm not sure that others feel the same comfort level.

If you're uncomfortable of unfamiliar with the command line. Create a text file called FirefoxPortable.ini and enter:

[FirefoxPortable]
AdditionalParameters=-safe-mode

Then run it Smile

It seems to be the Omnibar add-on. Uninstalling won't fix it though. The only thing that fixed it was downloading Firefox Portable and starting again.

I am getting errors about inability to start the security portion of the application with FF portable version 3.6 and beyond. It is such a basal error that the error reporting mechanism is not able to function. Pressing "restart firefox" just perpetuates a loop of failure.

A clean install does not work. I have to use 3.5 series on WinXP and shut off updates.

Your computer has a issue then.
