PowerISO

PowerISO would be great because of the need for extracting from .iso and .daa formats and it would also save time

Guess what?

7-Zip already does ISO and DAA files.

Neeeeexxxt...

By the way, PowerISO is teh evil proprietary warez, and DAA is its teh evil proprietary format. We're not buying it for you, you know.

but...

what about burning .iso's? i try to do stuff like that a lot but every iso progy that has a burner application isnt free or it only works for a limited time. i could use an iso prog that would burn iso files. (Also: how do you compress files using 7-zip? cnat figure it out! did it once and forgot!)

Obviously you haven't searched hard at all. My ISO burner of choice is IMGBurn. It makes ISO's and burns them. It will even verify disk to ISO and ISO to Disk. Many features and all 100% absolutely free. From the former makers of DVDRip. Next time go past the first page in your google search.

.

I find that if Google doesn't turn up anything useful, this site almost always will. In fact, I remember just a couple months ago some CD burning software was mentioned on these forums (CDRTFE?).

Effective searching of the internet is a skill that is well worth learning. Sooner or later you will need it, and besides, doing it yourself sure beats being told to RTFM.

correction...

7-ZIP can infact compress most ISO's. It just can't make them. It can compress them into an archive and open them to extract data. No compression utility can create an ISO or any other disk format. This issimilar to WinZip being able to open 7zip and RAR and ACE but can't compress those natively.

I suggest you

Stop hijacking threads randomly sergentsiler. You're steering this thread away from PowerISO and into general compression.

...

Follow the thread path. I was replying to the person before you about there usage of 7zip to correct them. Not you. As for using a piece of software, it has FAQs. Plus if you can't intuitively figure it out, go back to winzip as that is easier to use.

Let us get back on topic now.

ISO Buster

(Although not opensource) includes a free (limited) version in it's package. It's fairly nice, too. I use it.
Included tools and features:
-disc image burner
-disc image creator
-disc image extractor
-multi language
(if I posted the full list I would get yelled at so I'm stoping here.)
Here it is. On this page is the download and the full features list. Overall a great program with a great (yet limited, somehow) free version.

Edit: I doubt it runs from a portable drive. It also can run on linux via "Wine"
Also, found the limiter. Broken/scrached disc data recovery is disabled.

Virtual Drive

I use PowerISO for its virtual drive capability. I keep cd/dvd images on my flash drive and access them using PowerISO.

If it could be portablized then I would not need to install PowerISO on systems that I work on.

Burning or creating .iso images is not near the top of the list of things I use PowerISO for.
