Portableapps.com on Windows 8 Developer Edition

Hi all! I just got the Windows 8 Developer edition and installed it on my computer. I really like what I am seeing so far and can't wait till the beta.

I ran the "Next" Pre-Release on my external HDD, and it would never let me close the platform or eject because Windows was not letting PA.c write to the USB. Running PA.c in "Administrator Mode" fixed this problem. The only issue I have is letting it run in Admin mode. Just for obvious security reasons.

Just thought I would let you know what I have found, and I don't know if this is the correct place to put this. Oh well. :/

it's been mentioned that

it's been mentioned that testing should be done on officially supported and release copies of windows, not developer previews etc since it's not the final product.

¿NTFS Permissions?

As Windows Vista, and 7 both exhibit "The dreaded NTFS Permissions Error", it seems likely (to me) that the Windows 8 Developer Preview does too (it won't run on my Virtual Machines, and I haven't got around to trying it on a Physical Machine, so I can't check…yet) thus my preliminary diagnosis of your issue is that it's being caused by said "Dreaded NTFS Permissions Error".

First please check if the File System on the drive exhibiting this behavior is using NTFS?

You can check this byRight-clicking on the drive's icon in "My Computer" [9x/2k/XP] or "Computer" [Vista/7/8—Dev-Preview] and clicking "Properties")

If it is, please follow these instructions:

John T. HallerTo fix it, right-click on the drive letter in Explorer, Select Properties, Select the Security tab and then edit it to give Everyone full control.

If not, you'll have to give more information for me to be of any help (at least till I get the Win8—DevPreview going here).

Tested and Working

I just tested the platform running from a USB flash drive on a fully-patched (as of Oct 8th) Windows 8 Build 8102.winmain_win8m3.110912-1733. Using the standard default user created on the x64 Dev Build (with Visual Studio and other fun things), the Start.exe starts directly by double-clicking on it and the platform comes up. I then brought up the app store and downloaded Firefox Portable then ran it. I then ejected the drive using the eject button within the PortableApps.com Platform. All worked properly.

This was all done with no UAC prompt and no need to right-click and run as admin. The machine is configured with the default options including SmartScreen, Windows Firewall and Windows Defender enabled. I tested it from a FAT32, exFAT and NTFS. NTFS was formatted on a Windows 7 machine using the default options which will correctly set the 'Everyone' user with full permissions (as explained above, this is required and some OSes like Windows XP will not do this by default).

I'd wager that you're running into the old NTFS permissions bug, which is explained in 3D1TOR's post above. Give that a try.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Yes, I formatted this drive as NTFS in XP... That is where the problem laid I guess.

Thanks all for the help. I

Thanks all for the help.

I really recommend trying out Windows 8. I really like the way Windows is going, though most people would vehemently disagree. There are many things that are missing, like most of integrating the Metro UI to work well with mice, but it is a great stepping stone and I believe by the time it reaches RTM it will be a very good OS.
