Gaim logoPortable Gaim is now Gaim Portable, and version 2.0 Beta 3.1 has been released in both English-US and multilingual packages. For the unfamiliar, Gaim Portable is the handy Gaim instant messager packaged with a PortableApps.com Launcher as a portable app, so you can take your buddy lists with you right on your iPod, USB flash drive or other portable device. This new release adds in several new features, including: the ability to run from a CD, in-place upgrades, improved language support and more. Read on for all the details...

Portable Gaim becomes Gaim Portable

The first thing you'll notice is that the name has been changed from Portable Gaim to Gaim Portable. Why the name change? All the apps at PortableApps.com are now following this format, making it easier to sort and use all your portable apps.

What's New?

So, what's new? Quite a few things:

Live/CD Support - Gaim Portable now supports running from a CD or other read-only media, making it easy to carry with you and use. Just be sure to follow the instructions to get it properly setup. Full details are in the support topic on Running from a CD.

In-Place Upgrades - Gaim Portable now supports the ability to do what we're calling an "in-place upgrade". This means that you can extract it right over an existing installation of Gaim Portable without losing any of your logs and it'll Just Work. This will apply to future releases of Gaim Portable as you'll still need to manually update due to the directory changes.

Better Language Support - You can now specify the language you wish to run Gaim in independent of the operating system's language, making it easier to travel with Gaim in a foreign land.

Split App/Data Directories - Gaim Portable now uses the App and Data directory structure common to all PortableApps.com apps, making it even easier to upgrade and backup your data.

Improved Compatibility - Gaim Portable uses some new techniques so that it will not have issues when run on a PC with a local install of Gnumeric.

Encyprtion Support - The Off The Record encryption plugin isn't included by default, but is made available in an easy to use installer right from the Gaim Portable homepage, allowing you to securely communicate with other Gaim and Gaim Portable users.

...or am I missing out on something? I still can't use Gaim on my MSN account. I get the same message that I used to in the previous version; "Connection error from the Notification server: Writing error".

Is this a Gaim/MSN problem or is it local?

I have to say I'm ever disappointed to see that "Off The Record" is no longer part of the default Gaim download. this was one feature that really started me using the portable version versus the full install.

Yes, I did see the "easy to install link". But in my opinion this just moves the "Off The Record plug in" 1 step further away from not being included or supported (meaning redistributed ) by portable gaim.

1. It isn't included with the base install of Gaim. I try not to deviate from a base install of the standard product unless there's a compeling reason (Abiword Portable including the ODF plugin, for instance, so users of OpenOffice.org Portable and AbiWord have a common open format to use).

2. Most people don't use it. Since most Gaim users don't have OTR installed, very few people actually set it up. So, for most people, it's a waste of 1mb on their device. It wasn't enabled by default in the old package, so you had to make a few clicks. This is just a few extra clicks to enable it. It's dead easy to install for anyone who wants it.

If you wish to discuss it further, please do so in the forums.

Is it possible de make the gain buffer all the history messages and record in the portable device in one time when i close the program?
Because I use an "ipod" (zen vision) with a micro hard drive and every time the program request or try to write someting it need a little time.

I've been using Gaim portable for a couple of weeks now, and I just wanted to post that I love it! Thank you for making it available!
