New In Firefox 3.5

Firefox 3.5 makes surfing the Web easier and more enjoyable with exciting new features and platform updates that allow Web developers to create the next generation of Web content. Native support for open video and audio, private browsing, and support for the newest Web technologies will enable richer, more interactive online experiences.

Performance. Firefox 3.5 includes the powerful new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine, which delivers unprecedented performance with today’s complex Web applications. Firefox 3.5 is more than two times faster than Firefox 3 and ten times faster than Firefox 2.

Open Video and Audio. Enjoy video and audio content from within your browser, without the need for plugins. Video is a vital part of the modern Web, whether it’s used to communicate, educate, or entertain. Firefox 3.5 delivers the first native integration of audio and video directly into the browser. Now everyone can easily watch open format Ogg Theora videos.

Web developers can use these technologies to design pages that interact with video content in new and exciting ways, offering richer interactive experiences beyond controlling playback and volume.

Privacy Controls. Firefox 3.5 includes features designed to protect your privacy online and provide greater control over your personal data.

While using the new Private Browsing mode in Firefox 3.5, nothing you encounter on the Web will be stored from that moment on during your browsing session. Unique to Firefox 3.5, the new Forget this Site feature can remove every trace of a site from your browser. If you want to remove all private data or activity from the past few hours, Clear Recent History, another Firefox-only feature, gives you full control over what stays and what goes.

Location Aware Browsing. Location Aware Browsing saves you time by allowing websites to ask you where you are located. If you choose to share your location with a website, it can use that information to find nearby points of interest and return additional, useful data like maps of your area. It’s all optional – Firefox doesn’t share your location without your permission.

New in This Release

In this release, Firefox has been updated to 3.5.3 (release notes).

Auto-Update Issue

If you allow Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition to auto-update, some non-personal files may remain on the local PC. This will be addressed in a later release.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

Hello,

just downloaded the Italian setup - 454Kb (too short!) - and installed - no errors but...

.. it screwed up completely my Portable FF installation.

I'll try installing now the english one, hoping my personal data is left intact...

Looks like one of the Mozilla mirrors was serving out an incomplete copy of Firefox 3.5.3's Italian build and that happened to be the one the portable builder pulled. I've got it fixed on the main SourceForge server, so it should hit the mirrors in about 20 minutes or so from now.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

3.5.2 Italian and back in business, but will wait for the fix to Italian version.

Thanks,
Mario

Sooo

Good Job on the update!
Nice and fast!

When I just updated to it, it removed all of the add ons/extensions I had previously had. I didn't notice and other settings that we changed.

There is nothing new in the installer or launcher for this release at all and nothing in Data\profile is touched. Please post a note in the support forums with details.

does this affect the plugins that I have on fire fox if I update it?

As with all Portable Apps, installing a new version right over the old one doesn't touch your personal data and which, in this case, includes your plugins.

What about the extentions?

This is my first post, and I'll try to be as precise as possible.

I have found a bug which can be reproduced at any pc. When running Firefox portable from a pc and having installed the Logitech Setpoint drivers, everytime you hit the "back" button on the mouse to browse back on a website the search window pops up and plays the "error" sound (that default Windows "bing" sound).
I always leave the settings from the Setpoint software at default except for the middle mouse button, which I always set on "default".
The default setting from the Setpoint software is "auto zoom". I have to more buttons on my mouse for foreward and back browsing or foreward and back on the explorer.
So this error "bing" only appears after the installation of the Setpoint software and when I use the "back" button on my mouse to browse back in Firefox portable.
As far as I know I'm using the latest portable Firefox (3.5.3 as I write this) and the latest Logitech Setpoint Software (4.80 for win x64).
This bug is out there since the Firefox 3.0 release. In earlier editions I either didnt notice it or I cant remember.

Could you please tell us why you think this is a bug with FireFox Portable, have you tested this in an Installed version of FireFox and found this to not be a problem there?

If not, test to see if regular FireFox behaves in the same way, if it does you need to report it to Mozilla. If it does not occur in the installed version of FF but does in FFP could you please repost this and indicate that information here:

Comments to this release story are not likely to get a response.

But welcome to PortableApps.com Smile

Things have got to get better, they can't get worse, or can they?

Since upgrading to v3.5.3 I can now only access gmail through the Simple interface, not the Standard HTML interface. Page stalls, says "Done", but displays blank page.

If your Firefox Portable no longer loads, it may be because you have installed/upgraded Norton NIS to 2010. This will install (whether you want it or not) 2 Norton extensions (Norton IPS 2.0 and Norton Toolbar 4.0) that are incompatible with several other extensions (such as IE View) and prevent Firefox 3.5.x from starting, without any explanation.

Solution: Start Firefox Portable in Safe-Mode and disable these two new Norton extensions. Then restart Firefox and it will load normally. Firefox will then remember that these are disabled and NIS won't reactivate them.
