logoInkscape Portable 0.47 has been released. Inkscape Portable is an open source scalable vector graphics editor packaged as a portable app, so you can do your graphics work on the go. It has all the same great features of Inkscape including markers, clones, alpha blending and has a streamlined interface. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Suite. And it's open source and completely free.

Read on for more details...

Features

ScreenshotInkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format.

Inkscape supports many advanced SVG features (markers, clones, alpha blending, etc.) and great care is taken in designing a streamlined interface. It is very easy to edit nodes, perform complex path operations, trace bitmaps and much more. We also aim to maintain a thriving user and developer community by using open, community-oriented development.

Working With Inkscape Developers

As with many of our new releases, we've worked directly with the Inkscape developers on this portable package and it is hosted by the Inkscape project itself and distributed as the portable version of their software. We'd like to thank the Inkscape developers for their cooperation and for working with us to make Inkscape more portable.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

Inkscape Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

Inkscape Portable is available for immediate download from the Inkscape Portable homepage. Get it today!

I'd like to thank Chris for all his work on this on both the Inkscape Portable launcher and the patches he worked with for Inkscape's code. I'd also like to thank the Inkscape developers for working with us on this release... and for creating this awesome app in the first place.

And thank you for releasing it Smile

I've added the "Support the Inkscape project directly" donation button to the application page as is done with some of our other applications (and as is done in help.html as the Inkscape team wanted it).

Oh yeah, the Inkscape logo has also changed from the one which you included in the applications directory, news page and application page. It's probably easiest to get the new versions from appicon.ico or inkscape.exe.

It's really very small compared to all portable editions done by other people; I've completely separated the languages out (none of the older versions by Marko etc. did that, fully at least) and compressed everything, and it ends up being much smaller than the 230MB (no langs) to 283MB (all langs) of the official package. 88-163MB is getting off very lightly Smile

Great work Chris. Just wondering, why is this listed as a freeware release?

Andibad, i interesting about this portable app website and great can save all file to my flashdisk 2-8 gb and no file in host computer, i like that.

x-inkscape is also portable?

Yep, x-inkscape is portable too, but it is from a different portable applications provider.
When you look at the internet there are more and more communities providing portable applications. So if you really like you can take the best of all worlds, so to speak.
But you need to know that not all of them are playing by the rules. For example some of them seem to violate terms of license according to some people or do not publish the modifications they made (this is against the GPL license if it is applicable).

This version is superior to X-Inkscape; the main reason is that this uses a supported technique for changing the settings location, whereas X-Inkscape still moves settings back and forth, I believe. Additionally, this package is compressed better, and supports installation without all the languages, making it significantly smaller than X-Inkscape. Also, this is an official Inkscape package, supported by both PortableApps.com and Inkscape.org.

If you're interested in it, don't bother dealing with figures of flash performance, just try it.
