Features

ScreenshotµTorrent is the world's most popular BitTorrent client. Most of the features present in other BitTorrent clients are present in µTorrent, including bandwidth prioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading and Mainline DHT (compatible with BitComet). Additionally, µTorrent supports the Protocol Encryption joint specification (compatible with Azureus 2.4.0.0 and above, BitComet 0.63 and above) and peer exchange.

µTorrent was written with efficiency in mind. Unlike many torrent clients, it does not hog valuable system resources - typically using less than 6MB of memory, allowing you to use the computer as if it weren't there at all.

Various icon, toolbar graphic and status icon replacements are available, and creating your own is very simple. µTorrent also has support for localization, and with a language file present, will automatically switch to your system language. If your language isn't available, you can easily add your own, or edit other existing translations to improve them!

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

µTorrent Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

Hi Guys,

Currently the "non-Portable" version installer has Ask Toolbar as an option.

Unfortunately un-ticking all thee checkboxes for Ask Toolbar still installs this very undesirable thing.
(see some threads in µTorrent forum)

Updating from µTorrent should not bring the Toolbar but for a long time v1.8.4 says that "no updates available"

Can you please tell the situation regarding Ask Toolbar with the Portable version?

Thanks in advance

our portable version should not install any toolbar.

Too many lonely hearts in the real world
Too many bridges you can burn
Too many tables you can't turn
Don't wanna live my life in the real world

Thanks a lot, OliverK

I suspected as much Smile

Is it possible to install the Portable and then use its v1.8.5
and overwrite the existing v1.8.4 on that PC where non-portable is installed?

Actually previously there was no Installer and you could just download new executable and overwrite the old one.

Thank you for the answer again

well, you could download\install to a flash drive, then copy the binaries from uTOrrentPortable\App\uTorrent to whereever you have uTorrent installed.

I don't know if it will work or not, but in theory it should.

Too many lonely hearts in the real world
Too many bridges you can burn
Too many tables you can't turn
Don't wanna live my life in the real world

That's exactly what I meant to do.

I'll try and report back.

The settings that are in ...{SysDrive}:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\uTorrent
should be left intact...

I am just presuming that the EXE itself isn't changed by "portability"

Cheers!

Don't assume that will work, you may find the installer pops up instead.

utorrent has the installer built-in to the program EXE. When you "install" it it just copies itself to wherever you selected.

I imagine it uses some sort of registry entry to determine whether it is installed and thus whether to invoke the installer or program... and this entry would contain version info so upgrades would work properly. I'm also betting the launcher either a) spoofs this registry entry or b) knows a switch to override the installer functionality.

Huh? I've installed most every version of 1.8 and 2.0 beta that includes the toolbar. I always uncheck all the boxes and I've never had Ask Toolbar install itself. I just checked now and I indeed have no Ask Toolbar.

Maybe it's isolated incidents, or some people skipped the screen without realizing it? I generally frown on "out-opt" stuff like that for this very reason and was disappointed to see uTorrent doing it.

But anyway the toolbar is installed by the installer which is never invoked by the portable version anyway. It uses the PA.c installer instead.

Thanks for your inputs The MAZZter

yeah I forgot about the "embedded" offer in EXE that is not really an installer per se...

Well, I may wait a bit for internal update ...

or I will try "proper unchecking" Smile

or probably just install the new portable on hard drive

It would be nice though to find whether it's possible to copy settings and existing structure / files / etc. from the previous 1.8.4 installation

Cheers

ive had some problems with utorrent recently :/ and every single torrent ive ever tried on it has always said access denied and never works and its quite frustrating, any help or ideas would be very much apprechiated Smile

If you exit utorrent while there are partial downloads still present.

Then move it to another location. For example from C:\utorrent to D:\utorrent.

Then if you run it, it fails to find the torrent files (that it stores internally in Data/torrent directory).

Superficially, the files:

Data/resume.dat
Data/resume.dat.old

These hold absolute paths to torrent files. Normally this would be ok, but the utorrent method - where you drag and drop a torrent file into utorrent and it COPIES it and stores it in Data/torrent. And in this portable version where the idea that torrents and downloaded data are stored locally (i.e. relative to utorrent directory). This suggests that a move of whole directory SHOULD work (i.e. user-interface wise). But it currently doesn't.

The download/torrent directory locations are in:
Data/settings.dat
Data/settings.dat.old

However a simple edit of these files did not seem to help much. I wonder if some other location (possibly registry) is holding some absolute information that is not being updated by these edits.

thank you for your input and advice, it really helped alot Smile
