New In Firefox 3.6

Firefox 3.6 is built on Mozilla's Gecko 1.9.2 web rendering platform, which has been under development since early 2009 and contains many improvements for web developers, add-on developers, and users. This version is also faster and more responsive than previous versions.

  • Support for a new type of theme called Personas, which allow users to change Firefox's appearance with a single click.
  • Protection from out-of-date plugins to keep users safer as they browse.
  • Open, native video can now be displayed full screen and supports poster frames.
  • Improved JavaScript performance, overall browser responsiveness, and startup time.
  • The ability for web developers to indicate that scripts should run asynchronously to speed up page load times.
  • Continued support for downloadable web fonts using the new WOFF font format.
  • Support for new CSS attributes such as gradients, background sizing, and pointer events.
  • Support for new DOM and HTML5 specifications including the Drag & Drop API and the File API, which allow for more interactive web pages.
  • Changes to how third-party software can integrate with Firefox in order to prevent crashes.

Auto-Update Issue

If you allow Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition to auto-update, some non-personal files may remain on the local PC. This will be addressed in a later release.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition is available for immediate download from the Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition homepage. You can get the German release from the German homepage and the other localized releases from the Localization page. Get it today!

Whenever I try to download FF Portable or any other portableapps.com app I am getting the following error: "The page isn't redirecting properly Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete."

All other sourceforge programs are downloading properly, only portableapps.com are causing trouble.

Tried clearing cookies and even using a different computer, but got the same error.

Please help.

I just tried it and it worked properly.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I am having the same problem. I use Chrome and get:

"The webpage at http://hivelocity.dl.sourceforge.net/project/portableapps/Mozilla%20Fire... has resulted in too many redirects. Clearing your cookies for this site or allowing third-party cookies may fix the problem. If not, it is possibly a server configuration issue and not a problem with your computer."

Tried various programs from sourceforge and they download fine, just portableapps also.

@John:

I tried it once more from a friend's computer that uses a completely different setup and got the same problem.

Finally I tried using a proxy posing as a different country and the download worked properly. Maybe a range of IP addresess from Puerto Rico is being affected.

What concerns me is that other Sourceforce projects download correctly and the problem is only with portableapps.com.

I would like to know if the other person with the problem is also from PR. And if so I suggest to use a proxy server to download Firefox portable from Sourceforge.

Works for me too, I downloaded Fx 3.6 without any trouble.

For the record, I'm in the U.S.

John:

I keep trying and getting the same problem. And just as charlieddayton I am located in Puerto Rico.

Unfortunately I have no idea what a proxy is to try his solution. The only thing I know about my Internet service is that it uses DHCP.

Please help!

PS: Just tried other program from sourceforge again and all download fine expept for the portableapps suite and apps.

Same issue here in Australia. Not sure if it's relevant but noticed the "?redirector-do-not-right-click" bit of the link that is on the end of most Sourceforge hosted applications isn't on the Firefox link.

Navigating through Sourceforge to the file direct works Smile

PortableApps.com Advocate

Probably the problem is with users from countries outside the US.

John please check on this issue. I love your Portableapps suite and wat to use it!

@horusfoz: How can you find the portable Firefox by navigating directly on sourceforge? I tried but could not find it.

John T. Haller's picture

I contacted SF about the issue. It is an issue with their mirroring network, so it's not something I can fix myself.

Is it affecting every app on our site or just the releases in the last few days? For example, can you download Sudoku Portable:
https://portableapps.com/apps/games/sudoku_portable

Also, can you download the files when you browse directly into our SourceForge project (WARNING: slow page load):
https://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files

Thanks for the prompt answer John.

I tried from both links and get the same error messege.

As I statated on other sourceforge projects files download properly. The problems is only with files under the Portableapps project (tried various on your second link and none worked).

@John

I checked the files under the portableapps.com project three on source forge and they are not working.

I don't think it is a general sourceforge problem as the other sourceforge hosted programs download properly. It is only happening under the portableapps.com section of sourceforge.

please contact SF again to see if they solve this issue. Having to use a proxy is quite inconvenient. It worked perfectly a few days ago and as I stated with other sourceforge projects there is no problem.

John T. Haller's picture

I already contacted them. We'll just have to wait until they fix it.

They implemented some fixes for some other issues we have (since the PA.c project on SF has so many releases) and it looks like that may be the cause. We have to wait for them to fix it.

Thanks John.

If I can be of any help or further testing let me know.

Also an off topic question. Do you have an aproximate date for the Platform V2 Beta 4?

I am currently using beta 3 of the new platform and love the new features. The only thing missing from my wish list is autoupdate.

Thanks

computerfreaker's picture

Please don't ask about the platform. As many others have said, it'll be ready when it's ready.
John is doing things as fast as he can, so please don't pressure him.

Thanks!

Sorry, I didn't wanted to put pressure. I was just curious if there was any news on the project. I know John is doing his work (and good work to boot!).

I downloaded the file from this page.

Noticed it didn't work first time when I went back to it but did second time.

PortableApps.com Advocate

Thanks for the quick update, updated on my side.

Going a bit off-topic, ever considered making a PortableApps.com Personas?

John T. Haller's picture

It's in progress. Our designer is working on one. And we're discussing it tomorrow.

I did one as a blog post. Did it suck that bad?

Too many lonely hearts in the real world
Too many bridges you can burn
Too many tables you can't turn
Don't wanna live my life in the real world

it would be nice if you submitted it to mozilla's gallery (if John allows it, of course), so we could use this persona with firefox 3.6's embedded support for it, and not having to install personas plus to make a custom one.

Is it just me, or have others experienced that FF portable has become so unbearably slow since version 3.5.5 that it is now literally almost unusable?

I've had to switch to Chrome, losing all my addons, which doesn't please me at all. I did not add any addons that have caused this degradation, not changed any settings. It just decided all by itself to become unbearably slow. Oh well.

computerfreaker's picture

Try a clean install of 3.6; I've heard that helps.
I don't see much of a speed difference, although I think 3.6 is faster on startup/shutdown (could just be my imagination though, as I haven't actually benchmarked it). I upgraded from 3.5.7 to 3.6, so it could also be a 3.5.5-3.6 upgrade issue. It could also be an addon which was improperly written for 3.6; there are some of those left.

A clean install should fix your speed issues.
