Pidgin logoPidgin Portable 2.7.1 has been released. Pidgin Portable is a versatile instant messaging client packaged as a portable app, so you can take your IM settings and buddy lists with you. It has all the same great features as Pidgin, including support for AOL, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ and Jabber networks, but there's nothing to install on the local PC. This new release updates Pidgin to the latest version. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Suite. And it's open source and completely free.

Features

Pigdin Portable ScreenshotPidgin Portable is a multi-protocol instant messaging client that works with AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! and more. You can log into multiple networks all with the same program. All your IM settings and buddy lists are self-contained, so it leaves no personal information behind on the machine you run it on. Pidgin Portable supports the two most popular encryption plugins for Pidgin. Both are packaged as portable installers that automatically work with Pidgin Portable. You can install Pidgin-Encryption 3.0 and/or Pidgin-OTR 3.2 and communicate securely with other users.

New In This Release

This new release updates Pidgin to the latest release (change log).

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

Pidgin Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

Thank you! I hope this finally fixes the gtalk connection problems that i had with 2.66.

Given that both encryption plugins are quite small, why not just include them? Ubuntu has gone that route iirc. There's certainly far less useful plugins included in the Pidgin package.

From official Pidgin website: http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin#win32_gtk_theme

As of version 2.7.0, Pidgin ships with a private GTK+ runtime and doesn't include extra themes or a GUI theme switching application.

There is an easy way to use the GTK+ theme binaries and theme switcher that Alexander Shaduri maintains. Note that we don't recommend you use the GTK+ installer he distributes unless you know what you're doing and have a good reason for doing so.

Download the GTK+ Themes and GTK+ Theme Switcher zip files and extract them to a temporary directory.

Copy the lib and share directories from the GTK+ Themes zip file into your \Gtk directory (you want to merge those with the existing lib and share directories). Copy the gtk2_prefs.exe from the GTK Theme Switcher zip file into your \Gtk\bin directory.

You can now run the gtk2_prefs.exe applications to choose a theme. You probably will want to use the "Apply for all users" checkbox so that the changes are made to Pidgin's private GTK+ runtime.

If you follow their recommendation you will notice when you try and run the theme selector exe you will get tons of missing dll errors. I am looking around for solutions now and will post as soon as I find one that is simple for most users. What I had to go through to get this working correctly was not feasible by any standards.

*** If anyone has a fix I would love to see it, I can't get it working using any of Pidgins suggestions or any of my own tinkering.

Please take this to the forums for further discussion. It's unofficial and unsupported even by Pidgin themselves now, so it simply may not work.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I knew I should have backed up first. Thanks John.

Happy to see a new release but it's not working for me. Sad The processes just seem to hang, so I went back to 2.6.6.

UPDATE: Even a clean install doesn't work. (just tried) Sad

It's not a request for support it's an informational post to the public at large. I already added information to this post. I'm not trying to knock John's work, but if there's a larger problem here then it needs to be brought to everybody's attention. If I'm the only one in the entire world who is having an issue then I'll go quietly on my way.

Thanks for your reply.

UPDATE: I've found the problem, it appears to be with F-Secure but I don't have a solution yet. If I find a solution, I'll post it to the above thread. Sorry if I caused a false alarm.

but does someone know why AOL and ICQ isnt working anymore with pidgin ??
