Features

jPortable allows you to easily add a Java® runtime environment to your portable device. It automatically works with apps in PortableApps.com Format like OpenOffice.org Portable. No Java® runtime environment needs to be installed on the local machine and no admin rights are required. The JVM will be downloaded directly from Oracle's servers as part of the installation process.

jPortable Launcher

In addition to using jPortable with portable apps packaged in PortableApps.com Format, you can also use our jPortable Launcher to run Java apps in JAR format. It will even automatically portablize the settings of many Java apps.

Java Portable Apps Coming

This release of Java Portable marks the beginning of Java apps on the PortableApps.com Platform. We have an array of Java-based portable apps in testing and will begin releasing them soon.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

jPortable is packaged as a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

Does this mean OO.o will be updated soon?

EDIT: Also, "Java virutal machine made portable" on the app directory. (Virtual spelled wrong)

EDIT 2: Is it just me, or does the installer take an unusually long time to actually execute?

It's 104mb. And over 600 files. With a flash drive, that takes a lot longer to write than a single 100mb file. We only have a couple things bigger.

I worded that poorly, I meant it takes awhile before the installer even starts.

jPortable ?! Is this a joke ? That's why it took so long ? Finding a really stupid name?!
Stupid oracle,

no offence John, you're awesome. It's just oracle are so ...

No, jPortable was our own name. We had that set up even before Oracle required permission.

What took so long was an official statement from Oracle to allow us to package Java Portable (jPortable)

no matter the name, I just thought that (the name) was holding you off.

looking forward to see more portable Apps (Chrome, FF) use jPortable.

The update isn't handling the update, maybe because of the name change?

Look up: "Note: The PortableApps.com Updater does not yet update add-ons, just portable apps. So, please download and install this as you would a new app."

I an certain it will work once its released as libreoffice is a normal app.

I read your post wrong.
It depends on the app itsself and not on the java package if it supports portable java. Some apps can be pointed to a specific java folder and will use that, others like Firefox have hardcoded paths. I dont know about libreoffice but I guess it will be working with JPortable once it gets released.

what's the defined path to the cache dir?

i'm using jportable + jlauncher + jdownloader at the same external drive, but can always notice some heavy hard disk activity on system drive when working with jdownloader on slower machines.

It's up to the app itself. The jLauncher sets the HOME variable which will be respected for most app's settings. But any TEMP stuff will likely wind up in standard TEMP. jLauncher isn't a full substiture for a fully packaged portable app. We'll be doing Java apps shortly and jDownloader is certainly on the planned list.
