For me, an Audacity release is a cause for celebration, so thanks!

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

This version is actually the stable version. Version 1.2.x is not supported on Windows Vista/Windows 7.
Years ago, when Audacity first started, their parallel development roadmap defined 1.2 as the stable and 1.3 as the beta, the idea being that the 1.3 series would be a short-lived one with experimental features which would be incorporated into the next even-numbered stable release.
Unfortunately, that scenario proved to be impractical.
1.2.6 was released in 2006, and is no longer being worked on. It has far fewer features than 1.3, and is actually less stable.
Add to this that Audacity itself recommends the 1.3 series for most users, and that every experienced Audacity user uses 1.3.14.
If you read through their site, the only real reason they are calling this a beta is that they don't have complete documentation for this, and they have not translated it into every language on the globe yet.
IMHO, as soon as they can, they should forget about their current naming convention and get rid of the beta name.

Correct. Audacity will likely be in perpetual beta for the foreseeable future. So, for all intents and purposes, the beta is the only release.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

2.0.0 Release Candidates available - please test

Post by Gale Andrews Fri Feb 17, 2012 8:35 am
This topic is only for users testing the 2.0.0 Release Candidate builds listed below.

2.0.0 is our upcoming release to replace the elderly Audacity 1.2.6. It is based on the long running 1.3 Beta series which has many new features and has now had release-blocking bugs fixed. 2.0.0 gives Audacity a new non-Beta version for the first time in several years.

The Release Candidate builds below are offered before release for all to test and report on them so as to be sure there are no serious problems we are unaware of. We welcome any comments, but primarily wish to receive reports of any major problems such as:

* crashes
* lost audio in exported files or in reopened Audacity projects (.aup files)
* any features that work in your current Audacity version but do not work correctly in 2.0.0.
