Hi John!
Sorry to ask this but are there any plans to release the 64-bit version of opera portable? You could make it available as a separate package if size matters ^^

It doesn't fit in with our guidelines: https://portableapps.com/node/24371

Like most apps, browsers don't really get any appreciable speed improvement in actual use by using 64-bit over 32-bit. It has a slight improvement based on some artificial metrics (I think it maxes out at 10% improvement on some all-floating point Javascript you won't encounter in the real world), but nothing you'll notice in normal use. So, we'd be doubling the size of the package for not much benefit (from 40MB to 80MB installed and a 26MB download instead of 14MB with me personally paying for the extra bandwidth). Plus, most PCs have the 32-bit version of Flash installed, but not 64-bit, so you wouldn't be able to play videos and the like (if I recall correctly).

We don't do separate packages of 64-bit only apps as it's a horrible end-user experience. They wind up with an app that will work on some PCs (64-bit OS) but not others (32-bit OS) and no way to determine ahead of time if they'll work.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Reason why I still use 64-bit opera portable (i mean, the portable version readily available as an option in the original opera installer package) is that when I moved to win-7 64 bit about a yr ago, I immediately noticed the sluggish performance of smooth-scroll even in light web-pages like this one. (You know how a movie looks like while skipping a lot of frames for some reason? Something like that and I'm aware that I'm running it in an on-board graphics card) I can tell the difference since I've been using opera for like 5 yrs along with chrome and firefox and its smooth-scroll is what really impressed me and made me stay using it (never tired my eyes). Fortunately, opera with native 64-bit support was shipped and it rectified that problem.

Thanks for summing that up, John. That clear things up, shame I haven't gone past that link before asking.

Best regards,

As a pro tip for advanced users, you can delete the copy of Opera included in Opera Portable and copy in the 64-bit portable copy if you like. Just be sure to keep the opera_defaults_portable.ini file.

Side note: I notice no difference in smooth scroll performance between 32-bit and 64-bit Opera. But, then, I have a desktop machine with a decent graphics card.

Great tip John! Noted.
I'm thinking of doing that but quite unsure if the launcher would handle all the files in 64-bit the same way it does for 32-bit.

Now that you've said that, I'll definitely give it a go.

And big thanks for quick test you made about scrolling performance in both OS architecture. This laptop is quite old and I've read somewhere that opera is known to monopolize memory and graphics if needed be. Better to get new rig when sales are out XD
