logogrepWin Portable 1.6.5 has been released. grepWin is a simple search and replace tool which can use regular expressions to do its job. This release drops Windows XP support, which has been end-of-lifed by Microsoft. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Platform. And it's open source and completely free.

Update automatically or install from the portable app store in the PortableApps.com Platform.

Features

From the publisher: "grepWin is a simple search and replace tool which can use regular expressions to do its job. This allows to do much more powerful searches and replaces. In case you're not familiar with regular expressions, we have a very short regular expression tutorial for you. For example, you can (and maybe you should) limit the search to certain file sizes, file types, etc. Since regular expressions can sometimes get complicated, grepWin allows you to add your most used expressions to a presets list.

I've confirmed that, as with FileZilla and others, grepWin has dropped support for Windows XP. It's been noted on the app homepage and in the release announcement. In the next release of grepWin Portable the launcher will throw an appropriate error.

We didn't package 1.6.4. I linked to our last package that supported it as a courtesy. I should probably just remove it as it isn't something we normally do and it's just one more thing for me to maintain.

You'd still have downloaded it before we updated the app homepage and the Windows XP abandon page. We may be adding a page for last known working on Windows XP. But that will only really help if you fire up an app and it doesn't work then you can go grab the older one that does.

At this point, you have to assume that any app you have will abandon you at any given release. FileZilla switched their compiler so 3.9.0.1 worked and 3.9.0.2 doesn't, for instance. The only apps that are sure to support XP at this point are Chrome (Google will support XP for another 9 months, possibly more) and Firefox (Mozilla said they will support XP for the forseeable future).

It's been known to happen Smile Especially when we can come up with a solution to help users that won't require major efforts on our part.

The system I propose in thread of allowing users to download the older version (and automatically copy settings in) should work pretty well. We'll continue to get apps working on XP where possible as well (adding C++ runtimes to Blender for instance).
