Features

jPortable allows you to easily add a Java® runtime environment to your portable device. It automatically works with apps in PortableApps.com Format like OpenOffice.org Portable. No Java® runtime environment needs to be installed on the local machine and no admin rights are required. The JVM will be downloaded directly from Oracle's servers as part of the installation process.

jPortable Launcher

In addition to using jPortable with portable apps packaged in PortableApps.com Format, you can also use our jPortable Launcher to run Java apps in JAR format. It will even automatically portablize the settings of many Java apps.

at a guess, when Java starts recommending JRE 8?

I have Java 7u67 installed on my computer, and going to java.com and checking for new versions tells me

"You have the recommended Java installed"

also, java.com (currently) has the following page

Why is Java 8 not available on java.com?
https://www.java.com/en/download/faq/java8.xml

They (java.com) don't use the term 'open beta' with JRE 8, but I suspect that is not an entirely incorrect term for it?

I did not see the usual warning sign of "testing" when I looked at JRE 8, so I took is as a stable release. Assumed the only reason that it was not add to main page would be due to a large migration. Especially for the Microsoft's XP user

We won't be switching for a while yet. Oracle has no plans to push this out to the general users using the Java updater until early 2015. And most apps still haven't even been tested under Java 8.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Oracle will begin to push Java 8 out to general users on January 20th, auto-updating Java 7 installs to Java 8.

Java 7 will become unsupported from April 2015, with no further public updates after this.

Is there a public beta of jportable 8? I'm happy to help with any testing out.

Auto-update Notice and End of Public Updates for Oracle JDK 7
Coincident with the January 2015 CPU release, users with the auto update feature enabled will be migrated from Java 7 to Java 8. Also, please note the April 2015 CPU release will be the last Java 7 publicly available update.

The Java auto-update mechanism is designed to keep Java users up-to-date with the latest security fixes. To achieve this goal Windows and OS X users that rely on Java’s auto-update mechanism will have their JRE 7 replaced with JRE 8. Oracle will start auto-updating all Windows 32-bit and OS X users from JRE 7 to JRE 8 with the update release of Java, Java SE 8 Update 31 (Java SE 8u31), due in January 2015.

JRE 8 has been the default version on Java.com since October 2014 and is now being used by millions of users.
As we did when JRE 6 was replaced by JRE 7, we will auto-update users of the older release to the newer version of Java.
As always, all users are encouraged to update to the most recent Java versions available for public download.
In March 2014 Oracle announced the End of Public Updates for their Java SE 7 products for April 2015.

Will all my Java programs continue to work after the update?
Oracle strives to make new versions of Java backward compatible with earlier versions and the vast majority of Java applications written for older versions of Java will work –without any change- on newer versions of the JRE. There are however some exceptions.

This is currently unknown. Java 8's installer can't be disassembled to work with our live installer the way Java 7's does. So bundling it in the installer might be the only way. I'm unsure if Oracle will allow that though. Oracle is not friendly to open source projects.
