Firefox 49 drops support for processors which don't have support for SSE2. Generally these are older than a decade so the impact to active Firefox users is under .4%.

The bundled FirefoxPortable.exe launcher will inform affected users.

You can continue using the ESR branch until it is updated to Firefox 49 or later. After that, no mainstream browsers will run on these older machines.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Hi John,

Thanks for the note about SSE2 support.

Here is a bit of Off Topic reply as far as I can see it at the moment, since I cannot find any relevant info yet out there.
Briefly: version 49 does not work on XP Pro SP3 32bit whether it is clean install or update of Fox 49 from 48.0.2.
It is true at least here (?) for Portable (no extensions) and installed one (with and without any extensions).
Reverting to 48.0.2 brings it back to life.
The processor is Intel Core 2 CPU E6700 @ 2.66GHz
Set of supported Instructions: MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, Intel 64, NX, VMX
Differences
- The Portable flavour silently will not start the main App (no errors are passed to the launcher- would be the only explanation, which I’m not asking to be implemented Smile )
- Launching an executable v49 from …\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\
and/or
an installed Fox 49 from its location will fire up the following message:

“firefox.exe - Application Error
---------------------------
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application.
---------------------------”
Thanks for your time reading the above
Best wishes

Thanks Gord
Apology for the delayed reply
To make the story short - HitmanPro.Alert is to blame
Stopped/disabled the service; Killed its 2 processes; installed 49 over existing local & portable; Rebooted without .Alert
And voila! Both Foxes are working. The local one updated already to 49.0.1
Regards
P.S. Haven't been in .Alert's Support forum yet... but as soon as I have some time I will visit the place
