I know the trick to install stand alone applications in portable apps menu

Say you want to install Universal extractor

Download universal extractor.zip from a any mirror.
Create a Directory with any name (eg: universal extractor) in the PortableApps folder.
Now extract the content of this zip file in to into that folder.
In portable apps menu click options and Refresh apps icons.

This can be done with any application on a condition that the directory in which the app is installed or extracted does not have 2 *.exe files. Otherwise both these *.exe files will be viewed in Portable Apps menu.

Having 2 *.exe files won't effect your application any way.

Yes, you're right. But you

Yes, you're right. But you leave off the part about making sure the program doesn't make odd files in various other places on the computer or in the registry, or how to clean up those files or registry entries, or make sure settings stored in those odd places are available when you use the USB drive on another machine.

I know about it

i agree with you

I have also noticed Applications like keepass, sunbird, firefox that are run from PorbleApps Menu also leave settings in registry and in the Application Data folder stored in the Document and settings folder in your system drive.

For this we may require Applications like Eraser and some Registry Monitor integrated into PortableApps Menu to start automatically once autorun is executed and monitor all writes to the hard drive and registry and undo the changes when we exit the menu.

(i don't know if an application like Registry monitor exist)

except ours don't ...

since the point of the apps that are officially supported and produced for this website, registry settings and their ilk are removed once you close the program.

Other folks who create those apps do use programs like you mentioned to check before, during, and after to ensure that it is gone.

Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.

If you find a PortableApps

If you find a PortableApps program that leaves stuff behind after it finishes running, or doesn't remember its settings, report that as a bug. The developer(s) have tried to find and fix up those things, and will be glad for a report.

Search the forums for information on programs used here to monitor for registry and filesystem changes, so they can be cleaned up. The usual way is to monitor a typical install and use, exercising all the functions, then write a "launcher" that takes care of setup before and cleanup after. Unless the program starts doing weird things, there shouldn't be a need to monitor it in real time after the launcher is developed.

that may or may not work

honestly, if it was that easy why wouldn't people have done that instead of what they do now?

Please search before posting. ~Thanks

Trick? I thought everyone knew that...

Because most people either don't want to get their hands dirty, are afraid they will screw something up, or are too lazy to do it. For these kinds of people, Portable Apps Menu is the way to go.

As for the 'trick'... A lot of programs come with like 5+ exes in the main directory. So if you throw a folder like that in the portableapps folder, your menu gets filled up with garbage. I used to use portableapps, and whenever I wanted a new program on the list, I'd make and compile an exe that just launched the real program which I would hide in a subfolder.

Honestly, it's the stupidest thing I ever did... because after a few weeks of doing that, I found that there was a much better launcher called 'PStart' which lets you do everything that the PortableSuite did, but it is MUCH more customizable.

About registry stuff... if you find a program you want to use portably, why not just try using regshot with it? here are some really good tips if you're interested (specifically the "How do you test the programs to ensure they are portable?" section) PortableFreeware.com FAQ
