What is the purpose of this app?

Could someone explain what the purpose of this app is please. From what I am reading it doesn't provide active virus protection because it doesn't run resident on the thumb drive. So what does it do? Does it just do an on demand scan of the thumb drive? If so could you not just use a antivirus program that is already on the machine to scan the drive or am I missing something here? Thanks.

I think it is limited to on

I think it is limited to on demand scan. Yes active protection would be better. (The problem with active protection is that it usually needs to hook into the Operating System at a very low level, which isn't going to be easy if you are running without Admin privileges.)

It is good to have a second way to check for malware. In general, if you are working on someone else's machine, you shouldn't trust that machine all the way. Having ClamWin available allows you to get a second opinion.

Yes, if the AV on the host machine is working, it should protect the USB drive, and detect active infestations. But if it is not working, or has been compromised, you'd be out of luck.

Security sometimes means being paranoid, and is almost always inconvenient.

OK thanks. So if I install

OK thanks. So if I install Portable Clamwin on my thumb drive do I use it to scan just my thumb drive or the host computer that I am plugged into? Do you plugin the thumb drive and than scan the computer with Clamwin or just scan your thumb drive when you are ready to finish using the computer? Trying to figure out how it's intended to be used. Thanks
