Clearing Private Datawsm23 (Homepage)
- March 3, 2006 - 5:41pm
My U3 files seem to be swelling again. I am using Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.1) Gecko/20060111 Firefox/1.5.0.1 - Build ID: 2006011112 for U3 by John T Haller. Will Clear Private Data help with the file sizes? I also peeked at the x:\Documents\U3UserProfile\Local Settings\Application Data folder and that contains 32mb of info. Folders: {3248F0A6-6813-11D6-A77B-00B0D0150030}=10.8mb Apple Computer=20.0mb Adobe=11.2kb Identities=221kb Microsoft=1.42mb Anything I can ditch here? Ideas? ( categories: )

You can ditch all of the AppData
As long as you don't mind losing your plugins. That's what's taking up the most space. I'm not sure which of them will work right on a U3 drive anyway. Most plugins won't... so they're wasting space.
As a general rule, you shouldn't install FF plugins in a portable scenario (U3 or non-U3) as they won't work right. The one exception is Flash. And installing the connector DLLs for stuff like Quicktime, etc that you have locally.

DLLs for Quick Time
Got Flash installed right.
But,I don't see any DLL's for Quicktime.
Do I need to keep this one?
Look like a cache file.

Ditch it
You'll find a few things like that in the U3 version. It was, unfortunately, necessary to fake a USERPROFILE location so plugins like Flash wouldn't write to the local directories to obtain U3 certification. This is one of the side effects of that.

Thanks
