7-Zip Portable 4.57 Pre-Release 2![]() Submitted by John T. Haller on January 24, 2008 - 12:18am
Ok, so I decided to push this out as a pre-release instead to get a few more eyeballs on it before general release. Please give this a look over when you get a chance. Quite a few things were updated here: - Updated launcher now uses the newer registry technique (backup within the registry instead of to disk and using better registry backup processes on Win2K and up) Download 7-Zip Portable 4.57 Pre-Release 2 So, please give it a try and post your results. I'll release it as stable tomorrow barring any issues. Kind Regards, UPDATE JANUARY 28 (PRE-RELEASE 2): Fixed issue with INI file not being read. Fixed issue with settings not properly saved when reg.exe is not present (usually Win 9x and locked down systems). ( categories: )

What You need is OSS!
Same here
Everything ok.
It could delete the \PortableApps\7-ZipPortable\App\7-Zip\7-zip.dll file as its not included in the new package but not deleted from the old one.

No
Development Test are early alpha/beta quality builds by established devs or builds by new devs. This is, in fact, a pre-release.

No problems so far
I haven't encountered a problem on my Windows XP pc, at least not in the few minutes I got to play with it this morning before I left for work.
it would
seem to work fine here.
Works fine here too
Works fine here too
Edit: I lied. Settings are not saved, and if the user has an installed version with file associations created, 7zipPortable steals the associations from the installed version. The only way to recover is to open the installed version and reset the associations.

Opens fast and works great from what I can see.
Settings Not Saved
Ok, this is a clean install. Local settings are backed up and restored fine, but portable settings don't seem to be saved to my drive, there's nothing in the data directory.
Windows Vista Home Premium.
Edit: It looks like it's something with the 'FAILEDTORESTOREKEY' variable at 237.
Odd. My settings are saved,
Odd. My settings are saved, same OS. (Although I did do an upgrade install.)

Hmm
Hang on.
Edit: Nope, didn't figure it out. It did happen for ZGitRDun8705, too though...so it's not just me.

That is also true.

Works Fine
I tried the new version of 7-Zip on 3 machines; Thinkpad X60, Lenovo Laptop 3000 N1, and a PowerSpec (Pentium 4). The program worked fine on all 3 machines and I especially like file manager type interface that gives me details on my drives, directories, and files.
Everything's Good: Before & After
I manually updated to 4.57 before this was released.
Besides a few visual updates (mostly the splash & PAM icon), things remained the same. It's pretty much ready for a public release.

Not So Much
Read the above comments, the INI isn't working, and settings aren't saved if it's a clean install.
Pre-Release 2
I've posted pre-release 2. This fixes the issue with the INI file not being used and the portable settings not being saved when reg.exe is not present (usually Win 9x and locked down systems).

Thanks
I'll give it a shot.
Still nothing
PR2 still does not save the settings. Tested on XP Pro with admin privileges, will test on XP Home with admin privileges later today.

Nope
As of Pre-Release 2 my local settings are still fine, backed up fine and stay the same, however my portable settings are not being saved.
This is on Windows Vista Home Premium, but ZGitRDun8705 had the same problems on Windows XP. I'm using a clean install, and running from my desktop, and I tried running from another drive, no luck.
The INI does work now however.
P.S. Did you see the bug I found in the SumatraPDF launcher?
Edit: It looks like it's something with $FAILEDTORESTOREKEY, will it write that variable as true if it doesn't put any keys INTO the registry, and therefore if it doesn't put any into the registry, it's being told not to save any from it therefore your new settings created won't be exported from the registry?
Well...
If you (Patrick) were correct on what you told me on IRC, then the launcher isn't checking if the file exists or not. I'll see if I can take a look at a later date.
