Fewer Menu Icons?Submitted by markuswells on March 6, 2008 - 1:37pm
Is there a way to have fewer Menu Icons in my PortableApps menu for Open Office. I love the Portable apps suite. I came from using u3 and in u3 Open Office only shows as 1 Icon, so I know its possible but after poking around a bunch and searching I can find nothing describing how to do it. I have a LOT of portable apps on my thumb drive and need to clean it up. I would even be happy with a sub-menu. Any help would be appreciated ( categories: )

easy
There are several Launchers in /PortableApps/OpenOfficePortable. You can safely delete the ones you don't need as long as you keep OpenOfficePortable.exe. The OpenOfficePortable.exe doesnt show up in the menu but it is needed for OpenOffice to work.
A submenu isn't possible at the moment but maybe its in the next version.
And welcome here

How?
Thanks, I have been lurking for a long time and have decided its time to contribute back a little (as I think we all should at some point).
So I figured I could remove the other Launchers but as you mentioned the OpenOfficePortable.exe is specifically hidden (was written into the Menu code from what I understand). I tried to rename it but no luck so how do I get that one and only that one to show up?
Thanks again
you don't
This one (OpenOfficePortable.exe) is willingly hidden by the menu.
I'll give you an example:
I only need the OOO-Writer. So I deleted every exe in the /PortableApps/OpenOfficePortable folder except OpenOfficeWriterPortable.exe and OpenOfficePortable.exe. If I open the menu, I only see one entry there (OpenOffice.org Writer Portable).

That is the request
I understand what you are describing. If you run OpenOfficePortable.exe an App opens. Thats the functionality I want and I need a menu option to provide that.
I DO NOT wish to have only 'Writer' or 'Calc', I wish to have only Open Office Suite.
No other ideas?
Anyone have any other ideas? I do not really feel like having to use up more space on the drive installing an exe. just to hide some of the icons that I am hardly ever going to use?
I think its cool and will probably need to add that soon but I am already low on space and until I add more programs I think I will be ok (If I can just get ride of all but the 1 Open Office Icons).
The entire suite is accessible from any one app
OpenOffice is actually a single application, so you can open any OOo file type no matter whether you start from Writer, Calc, Draw, whatever.
I use the same approach: I deleted all the launchers but Writer.
It's not perfect, but it's not really any more inconvenient than opening an empty generic OpenOffice Portable app, and then choosing New...
I believe that in the new version of the PortableApps menu, it will be possible to pick and choose the exe files that you want to display, but I couldn't tell you when that will be released.
Edit: Just tried the hack that eddie234 refers to, and it seems to work fine.

I wanted the same thing, I found in here somewhere a oop hack. you can delete your extra icon and install the hack and it's just like your U3. You can search for it and I'll look to, if I find it I'll post back.
