So called "Stealing"

Recently, there's been a lot of 'stealing' other peoples' projects, for example typefaster, x-moto, ...
There has to be a way to make sure nobody 'takes' other peoples' project.
I have a few (probably not good) idea:

  1. Make a What's being developed forum where people can register to make portable programs, then if somebody's already workin' on it, they can just leave a note. (Problem with this is that there would be a lot of bumping when people want to take over a project).
  2. Do something like Ryan's wiki over at cubegames.net/development , but an 'in planning' wiki. And then if somebody wants to take over, they put their name in parenthesis below the original registrar. If the original registrar approves, then they remove their name from the author column, and take the other name out of parenthesis.

Anyway, I stink at reasoning, so that's all I have.

Ryan's wiki is a wiki -- if

Ryan's wiki is a wiki -- if you think there should be an "in development" page, start one. Blum Another possibility is a "Requests" page, which could have a "dibs" column where developers could put their name down.

Seriously, though, it is a good idea. It might also be good to have a couple of people put their heads together on one project. No need for two people to be duplicating their work.

Well, its a bit more

Well, its a bit more complex. For example VirtuaWin. Patrick did a version, but at one point he removed it again because because of an issue with plugin modules. Then I also made one because Patric removed his. This causes some confusion already because at first he didn't realize he removed it. About the module I just argued, don't use modules Smile

On the other hand some apps were made a beta portable then nothing happened, and someone else comes along and continues it or even makes his own from scratch. Maybe some beta's were abandoned due to being incomplete, buggy or no one was interested but some are abandoned just because they got stuck in the beta release track.

And some other people make so many portable apps they could fill an entire website. Take this guy DigitXP for example, seems he makes so many portable versions one might wonder if he could keep up with updates and so on Smile

Steal my apps...Please!

If someone would like to steal any of the apps I had in testing a while back...go 4 it!

When John said the developer needed to try and support the app for at least one year, that was the point I said "Dealer out!". Additionally, the latest NSIS scripts have gotten way too complicated for me to adapt to my apps since there isn't one I've found that does a minimum amount of stuff that I can use as a template. In other words, I don't know what code has to stay and what can be stripped out. Also, I could care less about having an .ini file for the app that allows all kinds of options. Run it from the place it installs. If that doesn't work for you, too bad. Recode the source and compile your own launcher.

ok

The source is in the file on Sourceforge. Lokking in my build repository, it looks like I started fixing tick5 to set the data dir correctly. I'm going to pack both pre3 and pre4 together so you'll have both.

http://renttopwn.com/files/Portable/Tick5Portable.7z

Once you get the file, let me know and I'll disable it from Sourceforge so there's no conflicts.

You need to convert over to the latest launcher code, the latest installer code, and rearrange the files for the new installer (it runs from \Source so no need for \Files\(AppName) setup anymore).

General Guideline

It's just a general guideline. And if you can only do, say, 3 or 6 and are willing to ensure someone is around to take it over, that's cool, too. We just don't want the situation where someone does an app and just dumps it for everyone else to deal with the support and enhancements going forward.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

well, part of the problem is if someone is wanting to do an app that's in question on who's doing it or will do it, or if it's abandoned, there is no way to contact anyone on this forum, to my knowledge, unless you start a forum topic titled "{username} read this". I'd be nice if the forums had private messages or something.

We

used to have psuedo private messages, but they spoofed the sender field of an email and so usually got caught by spam filters!
