Copying Bookmarks—for Intermediate skilled user

ebgunter - March 30, 2006 - 10:02pm

I transport a portable hard-drive between my office and home. I was using Firefox on my computers at work and home even before I knew about Portable Firefox. Now that I've installed Portable Firefox on my portable hard-drive, I'd like to copy the many bookmarks I have accumulated in Firefox so that I have access to them from the portable hard-drive. For those times I leave the portable drive behind, I also want to have access to my bookmarks from either desktop computer. Is there a simple method for copying booksmarks from Firefox to Portable Firefox and vice versa?

Locations and "Manage Bookmarks"

For "Firefox" this is usually where the bookmarks file is:

C:\Documents and Settings\(YOUR NAME)\Application Data\ Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.z12\bookmarks.html

For "Portable Firefox" this is usually where the bookmarks file is:

\PortableFirefox\profile\bookmarks.html

There is also (in both Firefox versions) a way to import and export bookmarks...go to the "Bookmarks" menu, then "Manage Bookmarks...", then the "File" menu, then either "Import..." or "Export..."

Synching bookmark files is probably another issue though. Anyone?

Bookmark Synchronizer

You can installt the plugin Bookmark Synchronizer. That's how I synch between my laptop, main system and flash drive.

You'll need an ftp/WebDav site to store the file

Otherwise, you can write a batch file that copies from one location to the other.
