ZachHudock - May 7, 2008 - 1:28pmAwesome...some people have waited a LONG time for this one
I think there is not enough contrast between the black and the dark red in the skin. Some of the buttons are rather difficult to see the image on.

Yeah, I just made a quick playlist of my random electronica mp3 folder to show the playlist in the screenshot. Haven't listened to it in a while.
Thanks again for your work on the skin

takes upto 1 minute to close on vista ultimate sp1
millarrp - May 7, 2008 - 2:22pmI've just tried it on vista ultimate sp1, and runs pretty well, and leaves nothing obvious behind. the only problem I found was when I shut it down it takes on average between 30 seconds and 1 minute to close.
More Info
Please provide more info. Are you playing a song at the time? If so, how long, what type of file, etc? How are you closing it (X on skin or X in tray right-click menu)? Does it matter where you're running it from? What kind of account (admin, limited, guest)?
On XP SP2 I can't recreate this at all. It always closes within a couple seconds even if music is playing and the launcher moves the files back and closes about 1 second later.
UPDATE: Can't reproduce it on Windows Vista (no SP) either. Works as expected.

Tested on Windows Vista,
Tested on Windows Vista, standard. Runs fine. Tried to duplicate mentioned problem, but worked properly when play *.mp3. I exited from the system tray and by clicking the x on the skin. Process Explorer (portable of course,
) showed the program exiting 1-2 seconds after closing, and the wrapper closing about 5 sec after that.
Good gracious! There goes a kangaroo. I must have a practice with me boomerang- Now then, slowly back
If you throw that thing at me, I'll jump right on your head.
Innit marvellous? Got a land full of kangaroos and I had to pick that one.
I guess it was my usb stick
millarrp - May 7, 2008 - 3:47pmI have been doing most of my pre-release tests on a slower usb stick, so I tried a fresh install on a different stick and it closed within a couple seconds
Okay, I just checked under
Okay, I just checked under an admin account, works properly. Closes in about 5 sec, all tolled. But I forgot to mention I was checking off the desktop.

Yay!
It's nice, even if I'm starting to get jealous.
BTW, did you remember to show that you can use WinAmp plugins? Maybe by putting them in Data?
Edit: The Downloady no worky.

Splash
arqbrulo - May 7, 2008 - 3:30pmI think that since it loads so fast, having a splash would just slow it down. But then again, if all the other apps have a splash, why not coolplayer?

I'd say the best way probably
is to Make coolplayer+ buff up the title for 100 milliseconds.
Or splash for 100 milliseconds.

Skins
arqbrulo - May 7, 2008 - 3:12pmIt does not remember the last skin that I used. I mean, if I change from the PA skin to the default, it remembers it, but if I change from the PA to the mini-PA skin, it does not remember it. Can that be changed? Or is it just the way Coolplayer works?

I think that's the way

no looks like an launcher
NeoRame (Homepage) - May 7, 2008 - 3:30pmno looks like an launcher thing, in my old version works fine.
but here i see, the launcher replace the ini...
Hell was full, so I came back!!!
Sorry for my lousy English!!!
Nope
This is CoolPlayer itself. It doesn't update the INI to say the last skin it used. We're using the unofficial 217.1 release of CoolPlayer (from their forums) for this which fixes the buffer overflow bugs in handling malicious files. If we bundled 217, we'd be opening people up to hacks. We may actually need to fork CoolPlayer to continue since development of the main app is sporadic and security issues like the vulnerabilities go unpatched for months at a time (1/2 year in this case).
Live with purpose.
Well John
Zach Thibeau (Homepage) - May 7, 2008 - 8:59pmJohn I've been working on my own build of CoolPlayer for some time trying to get the latest to compile in mingw maybe I could help out with the fork

Nice
Actually, that would be great since, at the very least, we need to add support for our other supported languages.

Request
arqbrulo - May 7, 2008 - 3:33pmSince Coolplayer+ is a modification of Coolplayer, I'm not sure if I should ask for this here or with the original creators. How about making the keyboard shortcuts a global setting. I love being able to change songs without having to go move my mouse or change windows to do it. Thanks.

LOGAN-Portable (Homepage) - May 7, 2008 - 3:35pmCool! But, eh, tbh. I'm not a big fan of using non-official skins for apps.
Thanks though!
have you seen the original
NeoRame (Homepage) - May 7, 2008 - 3:45pmhave you seen the original (right click->Skin->Default) ???

NeoRame (Homepage) - May 7, 2008 - 4:01pmnow you know why john wants a new theme? LOL
Hell was full, so I came back!!!
Sorry for my lousy English!!!
Cool app.
I see that all your themes are dark red.
You even promised to launch a new version last month...
I just want it. Even an alpha would be good. Just to see some progress being done. I'm sure a lot of users agree with me.
We need it.
Well will you release the next version of the PAM? I've been checking the forum almost daily since beta 4 in hope of the new version. It's been almost a year since the last update to PAM.
Please make a new version. I don't care how ****** it is.
Pretty please... with a cherry on top!
Artificial intelligence stands no chance against natural stupidity!
Lol.
The new theming is, but the site logo hasn't been fixed up to it yet.
The next version of PAM is awaited by everybody, and XRXCA, Maggotb0y, and SmithTech are working on it now. Maybe Geek.Menu will satisfy you for now?

Patrick Patience (Homepage) - May 7, 2008 - 3:59pmA pre-release from John T. Haller, long time no see. (Lol, electronica - don't seem like an electronica guy : ))
NeoRame, that skin looks seriously awesome. Gives a huge facelift to CoolPlayer.
John, the only thing I caught was in the source, the ;Website: is for KeePass which digitxp caught. I think this'll be really popular, nice work.

equalizer settings
Travis Carrico - May 7, 2008 - 8:21pmone thing: the new skin does not have a way to change equalizer options; the only way i can do it is if i change to the default skin to make changes then i switch back. i noticed when i'm on the default skin and click the button on the main app to switch between themes, then it opens up NeoRame's skin with the equalizer options shown but there's no way to get to it other than that way.
the EQ works fine for me.
NeoRame (Homepage) - May 8, 2008 - 4:27amthe EQ works fine for me. have you use the buttons???? or have you change the ini´s???
here are the buttons:

ini
Travis Carrico - May 8, 2008 - 10:13amthe equalizer window does not show by default. ok, now i see that the equalizer is on another skin ini. i have to go to options and change the skin from CoolPlayer+Portable.ini to CoolPlayer+Portable_EQ.ini every time i start the program. it would be easier if it was the default or if there was a button to switch between themes like there is on the default theme
Nope
Just click the skin switch button to alternate. It's between the minimize and close buttons. You can switch between normal, eq and shade mode of the included skin.

download process was ...
weird in that it didn't bring up the download window. It kept saying it was waiting to download in the status bar, then went to 'done'. I had to click manually at the top right link to get it to come up.

Save As?
Patrick Patience (Homepage) - May 8, 2008 - 4:00pmSounds like you saved the file with right-click... this file is on SourceForge like all of the other apps here, so you need to left-click always.
My work on free software is motivated by an idealistic goal: spreading freedom and cooperation. I want to encourage free software to spread, replacing proprietary software that forbids cooperation, and thus make our society better. - RMS
nah, did it the normal way ...
left click on the link at the top of this page, takes me to sourceforge which has that big "Downloading ..." in the midst of all the adds, little icons spinning up top as it trys to connect to something in listed my status bar.
Then is just says "Done" in the status bar.
So then I click on the 'if you have problems downloading' link and it take me to a second page saying "This is a portableapps download" or something similar, and also the little window with the actual file and options of save file or cancel shows. I save file, then it works.
It just happened to me again just now. I think it may be related to the fact that my harddrive is spinning, fan is going super strong and I've lots of random hd access lights flashing.
Normally, the little save file/cancel window comes up right away. I'm guessing it timed itself out on my computer.

IE?
Any chance you're using IE? If you're using IE, it prevents page redirects to downloads. So you'll always have to click the "if you have problems" or "direct download" links.
Live with purpose.
not in ie ...
I was in ffp. But I just tried it again just now, and it worked out fine, it took me to the "SourceForge.net: You are downloading PortableApps.com Porta..." page and w/ the small window that comes up that has me save/cancel.
The times that it didn't, explorer was running like 50% resources even though there was no other window open.
Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.
Splash?
A couple people mentioned that it was odd it didn't have a splash (since our other apps do). I'm not opposed to adding one in but it seems to start quite quickly and is distinguishable from the regular CoolPlayer due to my name change to CoolPlayer+. Thoughts?
Live with purpose.
might be nice for those using slower drives
millarrp - May 12, 2008 - 12:34pmWhen I was testing it on my slower drive it did take at least 30 seconds to start, and for instances like that it might be nice to have a splash.
How Slow?
I have an ancient 128MB USB 1.1 drive and it still starts up in a few seconds.
Live with purpose.
I have
a cheap (not ancient) 1 GB flash drive. CoolPlayer Portable (not coolplayer+ portable) takes about a minute to start up, let alone play a file.

Wow
Wow, that must be a horrible drive to use. Perhaps a quick splash would be in order.
Do the splashes for most apps here come up quickly on that drive?
Live with purpose.
The come easily,
but they end up taking the screen for about 4-5 seconds, unless if I'm on my PC, then is takes 2-3 seconds.

about 15-20 seconds
millarrp - May 12, 2008 - 6:36pmI just tried it with the drive that was taking a while to shut down, and I guess it takes about 15 to 20 seconds to start up, which isn't too bad in the grand scheme of things.
Don't care
arqbrulo - May 12, 2008 - 2:30pmI really don't care. However, the PA.com splash is something that is part of your portable apps. Toucan is a complete program by it self made specially for PortableApps.com and yet IT has a splash. Time wise, on the average computer with an average drive, we end up loosing one or two seconds so it's not a big loss.

The best idea
would be to execute it before the splash shows. That way it's fast, and the splash doesn't get in the way.

no splash
Simeon - May 12, 2008 - 4:18pmIf its fast enough I think it isnt a problem if there is no splash. Its distinguishable enough due to the name and theme change.

But
everything else has a splash. I say keep it for consistency.
Sure,
