Pocket PC Portable Apps questionSubmitted by Bob.a.ford on May 8, 2008 - 10:19pm
Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows if Portable Apps works on Windows Mobile off an SD card. I really like using Sunbird, Thunderbird, etc... and I would really like to know this before buying a pocket PC. If anyone knows (Or has a pocket pc w/ and SD card) I would greatly appreciate an answer, I'm looking at a pocket PC with Windows Mobile 5.0, if it makes a difference. ( categories: )

Windows Mobile ≠ Windows
Windows Mobile is not actually Windows... so you can't run any "Windows" software on it. Only "Windows Mobile" software. So, you can't run Thunderbird, Sunbird, OpenOffice.org, etc as they don't exist for Windows Mobile (nor are they likely to).
It's a relatively common mistake due to Microsoft's confusing name for the platform.

Nuts...
Nuts. Well, thanks for answering so quickly. that really stinks.
Will an OS wrapper be any helpful?
Actually, would it be possible to run vmware sort of thing on windows mobile and then run apps (windows based) on top of it.
So basically, you would be running your apps on windows which runs on an OS wrapper over the windows mobile OS. The same MAY apply for the iPhone too!
Doubtful
Windows Mobile devices aren't powerful enough to run current versions of Windows... let alone run a current version of Windows in an emulator.

Linux?
What about linux? Would linux be fine?
Maybe...
Maybe if there is a distribution specifically made for your pocket pc. Because of all the specific drivers and stuff linux has to be specifically compiled for each model of pocket pc But still today most linux apps are made for x86 processors. And most if not all pocket pc's today are xscale processors. As you can see I know a fair amount about pocket pc's so if you ever need help contact me on my website at http://www.bensawsome.gameguyshosting.com or at one of my many im names (I have AIM ICQ YIM MSN and GTALK. If you need something different I am willing to get that also ;) )
Thanks,

Somebody give me a portable video editor... Please!
somewhat...
That may talk alot about it but it still needs to be specifically compiled for the model of pocket pc.
