Thanks in advance

1. At least 100,000

1. At least 100,000 write-erase-cycles for block

2. Of course, any writing or erasing on the drive will shorten its' life.

Yes, but not enough to cause trouble

Really cheap-o ones will go for at least 100,000 writes per block, but all USB disks now have technology that evens the wear over the whole disk. I believe someone on this forum said that they reckon most USB disks will get lost, or become "too small" before they die.

So, in a nutshell: yes, portable apps will reduce a USB disk's lifespan, but not dangerously.

Agreed, never meant to imply dangerously so.

Beer shortens USB life

I have never had a USB disc either get too small, or wear out. I find that the secret is to make regular backups and beer makes old USB discs vanish, before they become burdensome.

LOL

I tried to minimize the Beer Effect by putting my drives on my keychain, but then my housekey life got shortened, too!

too drunk to remember ...

where you put it? Is that what you mean by beer effect?

My usb key is connected to my wallet by a short key chain. If I lost my wallet, it wouldn't matter that I lost my usb key. I'm royally fracked either way, might as well make it a double whammy. :)

Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.

Most USB flash drives have

Most USB flash drives have 10,000 write cycles.

(According to Corsair;) In order to exhaust a 8 GByte drive in ten years, one would need to write 21 GBytes of data every day for the next ten years. For a 4 GByte drive that would be 10.5 GBytes of data every day for the next ten years. And 2 GByte drive 5.25 GBytes of data every day. (So around 2.5 times the size of the drive each day for the next ten years)

And then there are drives with 100,000 write cycles...
