Contacting other members.

Submitted by dark_yux on May 29, 2008 - 4:58pm

Is it possible to create a "message box" in the user profile to contact other members directly with out trying to collect email addresses. I just think it would be easier than the "@ member" forum topics.

You mean pm's?

(AKA Personal Messages). Yeah I'd like that too but there's no Drupal Module for that (I had to register just so I could search! Drupal permissions are getting a little far...).
Edit: I found this forum topic.
It links to here. Too bad, still a dev snapshot for 6.

Somebody give me a portable video editor... Please!
If ya wanna see my email, go to digitxpsemail.tk (at least for now!)
My dad saved over $850 a month, by switching to Geico! :P

Or you can just enable

Or you can just enable per-user contact forms, which are in the (mandatory) core User module.

Nope

These send out email "from" the email address of the sender but actually sent from our server. Now that tons of folks are using SPF to combat spam, these will not get through.

Live with purpose.

SPF ???

Shame on you John :-P
For those of you who don't want to yahoo this:

User Page

If someone wants to put their email address [obfuscated of course] on their user page there is nothing to stop them from doing that.

That way they would be responsible for the spam they will receive, oh and yes, they will receive spam.

Yep

I b'lieve I started that trend.

?? so ...

thanks for the spam? ;)

Or use Facebook... :-)

I know most of you uses it... there is a Portableapps.com group there, but it remains in silence... and I don´t know any of the current members of that group...

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report :D

just joined it ...

but really, I don't see it as an active site, other then as a nod to here. :)

No

What I mean is putting a small forum on the user's page and people post discussion "topics." Only other members can see the messages. If you want to send really private messages the you do need to collect the other persons email.

Blogs Perhaps?

There is a link at the bottom of each user's page if they have created a blog.
Also, See Blog Menu on the left hand navigation menu on the left hand side of this page under your name.

BUT
Why would you want Only Members to be able to see it/them?
Plus, Anyone could become a member at the Drop of a Hat.

OK...

Lets say I wanted to talk to member X I could have 3 options. I can email X but then I'd have to leave him a forum message that has a risk of being bumped down just to get his/her email address. Second I can use the "@X" forum topic that takes up space, even though it was an open topic, remember the PTMB/Sergensiler website topic that John shut down (Though I did actually like the conversation). And third I can use a "forum topic" like contact list on the users profile page that a.) can't be bumped b.) you know they saw it and c.) not cluttering up the forum (though I have to use them).

And I didn't really mean "members only" (typing too fast) if the message list is on the members profile page then only members could see it as profile pages are not available if you can not log in.

Also, I can see the blogs but I don't have a blog menu This may be a Mods only feature.

Confused...

I'm confused by some of your points but let me address the easy ones.

The problem I did not forsee, sorry about that, is that you can't START a Topic in someone else's blog. You could only reply to one they started, bummer :-(

You are correct that someone who is not logged in can't see the profile. I accept that you didn't really mean "members only" in any case.

I can see the blogs but I don't have a blog menu This may be a Mods only feature.
I don't think so, I'm not sure why you can't see it.

Now for what I'm confused about.
I can email X but then I'd have to leave him a forum message...
Not seeing here why you'd have to leave a forum message???
When he gets your email, he'll read it, right?
Am I missing something here?

remember the PTMB/Sergensiler website topic that John shut down
No, sorry, I don't. If John shut it down I probably should not ask what is was about or how to find it.
But for extended off topic conversations I can see the problems.

But, to the point, my Blog idea is no good if you want to START a blog conversation. Unless the member made a Topic like "Comment here if you'd like me to start a blog Topic about something you want to talk about"

Sorry,

Blogs?

I've been itching to get at the blog feature too, but yeah, all I can do is read the blogs.
I thought this was only for mods & people who have released official apps.
Could someone please clarify this? Are blogs allowed for everyone?
Thanks.

No

You're right, I believe it's only for mods and some devs with apps released. I don't think it would be great to give everyone a blog, but developers, translators, etc.

:(

Okay. Thanks for clairifying though. I guess I'll have to wait until one of my apps become official.
