Updates

I'm glad to see all the new activity and new progress comming on the site and it's apps. And it's also nice that the site seems to have gone more and more away from just John working and on to multiple devolpers on apps. I do have one request though. John would it be possible to bring back the updates? I don't think we really need them every single month but every 2 or 3 weeks I think would be appropriate. Also I made a post about it earlier but I didn't get any responses. What is the rule for app themeing? I know it used to be taboo but that rule seems to have either slipped or gone away. So can you redefine the rule or if it's gone can we bring out the skins that were earlier kicked to the curb?

ditto

An update every couple of weeks would be nice.
Sometimes being on the IRC channel can give you some info too about what's planned.

Actually,

I think perhaps it would be better to receive updates via newsletter.
Speaking of which, when are we going to get started on that newsletter, John?

Nah

As said, the updates John posts in-forum are much more 'techie' if you will and the forum-crew wanna know. Not general public wanna know.

As for the newsletter, I know John always has a lot going on, and it's not fair to have him to that as well. I've suggested it before, and he had a lot of support and volunteers - I think we should have a group of dedicated, good writers from the forums on that.

Not Writing

It's not a matter of writing a newsletter that is the issue or I'd have sent one out with the Platform 1.1 release. It's a matter of sending it and then handling the response. We're currently using SimpleNews to handle sending, which would work. The problem is how do we deal with the thousands and thousands of bounce messages, email address changes, etc. Right now, we can't.

I thought SimpleNews takes care of

email address changes, etc.
What are bounce messages?

Stuff

When you send out an email mailing, you get stuff like:

  • Out of office messages
  • Autoreply: I changed my email address to...
  • This email address is invalid
  • This server is unreachable
  • You are not permitted to send to this server
  • etc

Our mailing list is at about 46,000 subscribers and this is simply more than can be handled manually. Since this will be our first mailing, we'd be looking at maybe 4-5,000 messages back that have to be addressed.

So..

What do you think about doing an update every few weeks and what's the themeing rule?

Try

I'm gonna do updates as there are some.

And I've never set rules on theming other than to say that it's a bad idea to replace a default theme with our own or include extra stuff with a base app (our portable app should match the regular app). The exception was CoolPlayer because it's more useful with our theme (which is why we changed the name). You're welcome to create themes for other apps they just won't be bundled with the portable app installer.

I know what it's like to get

I know what it's like to get auto-spammed when sending such a communication. I sometime have to send server outage/maintenance communications at my job, and receiving hundreds of "out of office" messages in the mailbox is not nice.
