I read that Second Life keeps all its files in the one program folder when installed on a pc.
So I took the batch script suggested by The Travelin' Librarian (http://www.travelinlibrarian.info/2007/01/second-life-portable.html), modified it to run silently by removing the pauses and then compiled it as a ghost exe with the icon extracted from the secondlife.exe itself.
I then created a sub-folder in the PortableApps folder on my usb stick into which I put this ghost exe and a copy of the Second Life program folder installed on my pc.
This seems to work tolerably well on my usb stick with the ghost exe running as an executable front end which in turn launches Second Life.
You need to change where Second Life saves its cache and message log, but you can do that manually in Edit>Preferences.
As I'm pretty much a flower arranger here, I'd appreciate comments!
Now this is nice
I almost thought of doing this with the Eclipse starter I had made in Delphi, but this looks just as good...
I'm hoping you are going to provide a link?
Here are download links as requested: http://rapidshare.com/files/142040919/SLauncher.exe and http://www.mediafire.com/?jwmmyaupwws
(For public distribution I've identified the program as "SLauncher" and used a generic program icon.)
If you don't have admin privileges, you can't install Second Life on many machines in order to prepare this method. So, a friend of mine went and installed, copied SLauncher into the Second Life directory and made an Ultra compressed .zip file with 7-zip for the benefit of people who don't have admin privs.
Second Life Portable Edition 1.23.4.123908
Instructions: Unzip and run "SLauncher.exe" to play.

Linden Labs has released a new viewer update, number 1.23.5.136262
So, here is another portable version using the same SLauncher.exe from above. Why can't they just release a portable version on their own when it took such little effort on our part!?

Ben, I was looking at how you went about creating the "ghost exe" or what exactly that means. I'm wondering if it has something to do with Norton Ghost or what exactly we're talking about, here?
Ultimately I just want to understand that bit of the process so I'm not reliant upon someone else as LL releases further required viewer updates, etc.
I really appreciate you posting this!
OK first of all, I made BenMcLean's package and sent it to him ... he just went and reuploaded it all over Creation using my upload method http://editthis.info/wiki42/Uploads
All I did was install the second life viewer, add loginmage's EXE above and archive the program viewer. It's just supposed to tide us over till somebody who knows what they're doing can Portable Apps-itize Hippo Viewer http://mjm-labs.com/viewer/ and/or SnowGlobe. (Hippo Viewer please! It's better equipped for connecting to OpenSim grids http://opensimulator.org/)
What would be REALLY awesome would be if someone could make a portable app out of the OpenSim SERVER package as well so that people can work on building on their own personal private grids and save their stuff to their own hard drive, which can later turn into the beginnings of a new public grid later if they want or imported / rezzed into other people's grids later.
(the rest of this post is unrelated to portability and can be safely ignored by the uninterested)
Another feature request for second life / open sim / grids is that there ought to be a way to explore a grid using software rendering or based on a very very low poly approximation for slower machines and netbooks. That would be really handy! Who knows, we might see a second life viewer on the PSP someday if we could do that
I wish AjaxLife would go open source http://ajaxlife.net/
I tried every link you have listed and the websites all say the same thing, that the file is no longer available... Can I please have so assistance? Thanks.
According to Norton SLauncher.exe is a Trogen.
Kevin
Don't trust your common antivirus to report everything correctly. If you get a reported virus/trojan, always upload it to VirusTotal and see what they say before panicking and yelling at people to not download something.
By the way, on the Second Life Grid, my name is "Gandark Wizardly" and on osGrid, it's "Nerd 42"
It isn't a trojan, no, not at all ..... and the "ghost exe" I'm referring to is the stand alone executable launcher I made which you can get from this updated link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13859151/SLauncher.exe .....
..... all you have to add is a copy of the Second Life program folder itself from your pc, and modify where Second Life saves its cache and message logs etc whuch you can do via Preferences when you're running Second Life.
I should add tho, that this launcher has not been tested with any of the later Second Life viewers after 1.23 - although 1.23 still works!
Here is VirusTotal's analysis of that file. It has 8/40 marking it as a trojan or other form of malware, all of them from lesser anti-malware providers.
Is it an AutoIt3 executable? If so, that would explain it. Anti-malware providers like flagging AutoIt3 executables as malware.
