Spybot S&D Permission

Hi Guys

Earlier today I emailed Spybot S&D asking if there had been any progress with the porting of their application and received an email saying it there was already one in the works. They gave me to links, one of which was to https://portableapps.com/node/2110

I saw this was stopped in 2006 so I am writing to see if this amounts to enough permission to allow the launcher to be further developed unto a dev test release after which I would think there would need to be some formal/legal permission given.

The email is below

================================================================

Hello Jeffrey,

There is already one available:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/faq/43.html

Or take a look here:
https://portableapps.com/node/2110

At the moment we have to check if the creators haven't change anything security related so that we can allow it.

Apart from that, Spybot-S&D can be easily used with an USB stick, even if the solution is not perfect. Just install it on the PC and then copy the installation folder on the USB stick.

Here are some workarounds:

Rejected

I thought we had inquired of them directly if we could repackage it in PortableApps.com Format and they refused. Or is that no longer the case? We'd be happy to release, host and support if we can get their permission.

ah but.....?

IS IT OPENSOURCE

also i am sure that there are allot of opensourse programs out there that do the same as spybot.

i do like using spybot just for its cleaning abilities and that is what i use it for. i hate the part of the program that hangs up the computre and confuses ppl when it is running so i disabled that. for all other virus things i use the very best AVAST FREE (avg works but is not as good, less features in the free version than AVAST).

the license posted on their page indicates otherwise...
At least, its not OSI approved.

This app is still available

This app is still available for any caring developer that wants to take care of it : ) Also can I recommend that the portable version not include the tea timer module which I think is being spoken of above. That way it will work as an on demand scanner the same way ClamWin does.

I'm confused (what else is

I'm confused (what else is new)....I have S$D, but if I copy the directory from my HD to my flash, how does it work on another computer (if I choose to use it then)??

the S&D FAQ listed there isn't ringing any bells for me

Spybot is freeware. However

Spybot is freeware. However the author has given permission for it to be ported using the portableapps.com platform. Due to I think hosting issues we're currently restricted to OS apps and freeware launchers. I was suggesting a launcher for this app until such a time when it can be hosted in its entirety on PA.com.

The "already portable" solution the author was talking about I beleive is not truly portable. By this I mean you can run it from a USB on other pcs however it will leave miscellaneous reg keys, possibly folders and data as well behind.

"i hate the part of the program that hangs up the computre and confuses ppl when it is running so i disabled that. ""

That is the Tea Timer module of Spybot. It I think is supposed to give on access protection as opposed to on demand scanning as with ClamWin. At installation you can select whether or not to install this. I used it at first and thought it was a good idea but over time it consumes more and more resources. This module is still in development so I would suggest if your using Avast as I am that to deselect Tea Timer at installation. As you already have it installed, maybe uninstall and reinstall without Tea Timer. Naturally with a ported Spybot we would not include Tea Timer I dont beleive as its quite likely to affect he host system and registry much more dramatically than the base app. Oh and I agree, Avast is superior to AVG.
