problems with sunbird portable

evafan - September 26, 2008 - 11:02am

I recently chose this program to log medical events of a loved one. I have found it very useful. However I have encountered some glitches. The events will not allow you to save all the data at one take. Secondly I was not smart enough to turn off auto updates. The other day the program updated itself not giving me the opportunity to refuse. It seemed to go ok! Now the program seems to be saving properly. However I had several duplicate entries. I fixed some of these and found them missing entirely when I restarted. I have lost the data for these entries.

I would like to recover the data but feel this very unlikely

Is this program unstable since it updated?

If it is stable and portable I suggest to other users save or backup any data allow the program to update then turn off updates.

Always Backup

First off, you should ALWAYS backup, especially when storing data on external devices. That's why we include an extremely easy to use backup utility with the platform.

Second, this is pre-1.0 software, so, as indicated right on the app's homepage, there will be some issues with it.

That said, I use it daily and haven't experienced any of the issues you've mentioned. I'd suggest returning to an earlier backup, ensuring you always safely eject, etc.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

help with the problem

I'm wondering if anyone else had this problem resulting from an automatic update. The data seems to be there split into 2 entries A blank one with original header, and another "untitled" entry with the data. When I tried to merge them They both disappeared on restart. I have several entries to fix and wonder what is the most efficient way to do this without losing any more data. Once I've accomplished this I can make another backup. I would like to continue using the new version as it seems to be saving all data with one save.

As well as frequent backups I suggest again that to turn off auto updates because you cannot trust the results.

same problem

Any reoccurring event that I modified a individual occurrence gave me the same problem. Worse, I though I had fixed it but when I restarted Sunbird, all had disappeared!

I restored from a backup and deleted each occurrence and replaced them with a new event. For future "occurrences", I'll do the same. Modifying an occurrence seems problematic. Also, I don't thing this is an "auto-update" problem, I updated using John's new version.

auto-updates disabled by default

h John,

i've often wondered why you don't disable an app's auto-updating feature when you make it portable (since an auto-update to a portable app often breaks the app)?

thanks,
david

Unfortuantly

due to the licensing agreement we have with Mozilla we are not allowed to do this.

please specify your version number

everyone,

when posting questions please remember to explicitly include the version(s) of Sunbird you are using. this helps the people who are interested in helping you.

thanks,

version history re:(Problems with sunbird)

Hi again

The original sunbird I was using came with the suite. I believe it is version 0.8 It auto updated to the regular version of sunbird 0.9. Besides the double entries it seems to be working fine. I found a way to fix the entries by coping the text into new entry.

Should I expect any problems if I keep using the none portable version. I'm just worried about the drive failing prematurely or something. like that.
