Sending Failed - SMTP Login Rejected

I downloaded and installed Thunderbird Portable on a USB stick and tried it out at home and it worked fine. But when I went to Portugal and tried it on a computer there, it downloaded my emails fine, but when I tried to reply I got an error message indicating that the SMTP connection was rejected.

I don't really understand this SMTP stuff. When I am at home, I use TalkTalk as my ISP and I guess my emails get routed onto the internet via their SMTP server because I am connected to their network. But when I used the machine in Portugal, I don't know who was the ISP, and obviously I can't use their SMTP server, but as I am not connected to my ISP I guess I can't use their server either, hence the rejection.

Is there something I am missing - how should I configure my outgoing SMTP address?

since this setting is not always the same.
Your provider at home, might use just authentication via IP address, that means if you are simple transmitting your mail from the address range of that provider, you are welcome to do so, you are his customer.
If you are outside, you are not identified by the IP address and thus kicked out. This must be so to avoid SMTP servers being used for spam.

Either you can use password authentication with your provider, well then you can use SMTP of your home provider still, if this option is not possible with your home provider, then you have to use the SMTP of the local provider while abroad.

Today, most providers will have the possibility of authentication by password, so ask them and then enter it into your outgoing servers settings.

Where do I put the password in Thunderbird?

If I go into Tools->Account Settings I can see that my outgoing server is set to smtp.talktalk.net, but I don't see anywhere to enter a password?

EDIT

on the right side, there is a window, there is your smtp listed (there can be more then one listed)
select your one (talk) and right of it find button EDIT.
click and find all fields needed for the setting.

in the appropriate field.
When you make first time connection with it (sending mail) you will be asked for pw.
then also you can let it save the pw or not. if you let it save the pw, it will work from that time automatically, otherwise you can enter the pw each time you send a mail.

I may be being thick but . . .

I can't see an edit button next to the Tools->Account Settings->Outgoing Server (SMTP): I can see an "Edit Card" button above, which relates to vCards, and a "Manage Identities. . ." button below, but nothing else?

on the left side, you have kind of folders with all possible settings to choose from.

down, the last setting should be called outgoing server (smtp)

you click on this one (select it) and then settings for this will appear on the right side.
There you will find the edit button.
