httphotos portable?

Hi,

I'm the main author of httphotos which is a tool to create web galleries.
It can be downloaded here:
http://www.digicamsoft.com/softhttphotos.html

It's size is less than 1Mb (940kb) and I'm ready to make it portable (I'm sure it's going to be very easy).
It's freeware but not open source though, is it an issue?

Please let me know,
Thanks,
Greg

Probably not

I don't think that it can be done because it is not open source. If it was open source it should be possible

He is right it can't be hosted here but you can make it portable

I don't have a short attention span. I just...oh look a kitty!

The question is

The question is not can you make it portable, it is can we host it ?

Of course you can make it portable, you are the author Biggrin
Just make it so that it does not use the registry or write files out side of it's directory.

If you want to use the PortableApps format it would need to use a separate \data directory to make backing up easier.

If it is not opensource we can not host it at this site at this time, but we may be able to in the future.

If you are not going to charge for it you might want to consider making it opensource though, it will win you many friends and a place in heaven Biggrin

And Welcome to PortableApps.com

Thanks for the

Thanks for the clarification.
I will certainly make a PortableApps verion of it, even though it won't be open source.
You might want to open a new section in this forum so other people can submit their closed source PortableApps?

It's in the works,

It's in the works,

but we may be able to in the future.
Is just my very conservative way of saying it Blum

Because you are the official

Because you are the official developer and copyright holder you ofcourse could make a portable version of your application. Some issues to keep in mind though:

Currently the launcher and installer supports Open Source software. So until the new launcher/installer becomes available you have to create your own solution. Eventually an official launcher and installer would be made available for non-open source applications but this might take a while. Currently the launcher and installer might be used by non-GPL software, but only if it's made available through PortableApps.com. Which brings me to the next point; hosting.

Some replies you got talked about hosting. While PortableApps.com might offer hosting for non-open source apps in the future currently they do not. The open source applications are hosted on SourceForge. So I guess right now the only option would be to host it yourself, which brings us to the next issue... promotion.

If you made your application Portable and host it yourself the problem is that it will not be featured in the list of applications on PortableApps.com. While your local site probably will link to PortableApps.com this site will most likely not link back to your application. This has several reasons the important one being a closed source app, not digitally signed by PortableApps.com. I hope you are allowed to post a link to your version as portable app in the beta test forums though.

You might always contact John for specifics, but in essence there's nothing stopping you to make a PortableApps compatible application available.

At some point in the future PortableApps.com wants to add support for closed source applications.
