Create your own portable (u3p) cad (dwg/fxp) viewer

Hello all,

After a very annoying day of searching for a portable CAD viewer I decided to create my own. The following are simple instructions on how to create the u3p file yourself since I have no site to host it on.

First download the LiteCAD zipfile from www.litecad.com.
Unzip the file into a directory and move the lcfont executable to the end of the directory

we are going to use packagefactory to create the u3p file and it will just grab the first executable in the directory for the u3p file

Download packagefactory from www.softpedia.com

Install it and run it.
Click on the "drop EXE here or Click to add" button.

Select all the files in the LiteCAD directory and click on create.

And within a few seconds you've got your U3P file.

Now all you have to do is install it by selecting "add programs" and "install from my computer" from the launchpad.

And you've got your own portable CAD viewer.

Hope this saves some people from the frustration I had looking for this Smile

Nope

PackageFactory doesn't make anything portable at all. All it does is create a zip file of it (U3P is just a zip file) and the simple XML file used to identify it. It's not portable and still saves everything locally.

This is the equivalent of copying the LiteCAD directory on your local PC and placing it in the X:\PortableApps directory on your device and having the PortableApps.com Menu find it.

yup

But since it will work on any pc, and since there is no real portable viewer available.

This seems to be the only option available.

Copying the files to the stick work just as well btw but this way it's in the menu.

All it does locally is add extensions (dwg, fxp, etc..) to the registry and save temp files. So it's not too bad.

Non-U3

Most people here don't use U3. The PortableApps.com Platform doesn't require you to go through all that to get something to appear in the Menu. You just copy it to the right place, that's it.

Still seems a bit odd no one

Still seems a bit odd no one has bothered to create a portable or U3 version of such programs. I searched all over to find a portable CAD viewer.

Plenty of non portable ones though.

Awesome!

This is a great app!
Thank you for making it!

As a side note to the portable solution.
Check out Cameyo; http://www.cameyo.com/

I used it to package this app and then used the portableapps.com tools to package it into a portable apps format. It now runs completely independent of the native system and can run off of a thumbdrive/server without a problem.
This is the resulted package. You may want to make any changes you would like.

I look forward to seeing this on the portable apps webpage.

Thanks again!
