Zach's terrible app gave the site a bad name. his is probably a -100. But I will make that an outlier and say overall about a 4

But...I could go 5. Some apps act like little gremlins sometimes, slow to react, etc. But I prefer them to the bloated commercial programs.
Open Source...., the choice of a GNU generation.
Gremlins :D awesome movie

Yeah, it was.
The part at the end where they were getting wet and multiplying creeped me out when I was younger, though.

The results are in
5 -- OpenOffice.org, Firefox, The GIMP, GNUcash, GVim, Inkscape, Thunderbird (I use these on my Mac so there inclusion in PostrableApps is vital)
4 -- Abiword (but that's because the Mac version doesn't work too well)
1 -- Pretty much everything else
0 -- LyX because it doesn't work otherwise it'd be up at 5.
Audacity...
Audacity gets A 5, it also needs to be update from 1.2 to 1.3.5 version...(it has better effects(

GIMP Tutorials
You could try some of the tutorials at The GIMP tutorials page. Starts with the basics and goes through to the really complex stuff.
Alternatively there are personal sites/blogs with GIMP tutorials. For example, The GIMP Guru who can be found here and Meet the GIMP is here with loads of videos. There is a group on flickr where you can ask questions about The GIMP .
You could try searching YouTube which has a bunch of videos showing how to use and exploit The GIMP.
I've used all those resources to learn what The GIMP can do for me.
If those aren't enough then a Google search for "GIMP tutorial" will give you loads more places to look at and figure out how to combine photos. Also search for PhotoShop tutorial web sites as they are useful for learning techniques but one needs to be aware of the differences between the two programs.
I for one thank you, it'll be

May I ask why you always use the reply button, even when you're not exactly replying to their message? It makes it hard on people since then can't go back and edit it.
I was going to got rid of the (coming out soon) message since I just go it in development testing.

Miranda - 1
Nvu - 3
WinSCP - 3

My 2c
5) FireFox, PeaZip, 7Zip, PuTTY
4) Thunderbird, ClamWin, JKDefrag
most of other ones ranges from "don't care"/"don't like"... and the few "hate it" doesn't merit mention!
Overall on the apps I use
4=I like it
kudos to the many individuals who work to make the applications portable and functional. I have greatly enjoyed tinkering with my USB and the applications found here. I take them from Vista to XP without any issues.
Portable Apps Rating
5 - I use most of the apps.
EXCEPT - I Wish there was a reliable graphcalc portable edition on here.

the best
Rate it a 5. Use at least one portable app daily. Keep up the good work.
5) The Best
Theres an app for nearly everything and I tend to use my portable at work and at home more so than the host pc apps.
