Mono: What's the deal?

Can someone please explain what is the deal with Mono. I understand its a .NET aternative but there is some hurrah about its OSS nature. Can someone please explain what is Mono exactly, is it OpenSource and why is it causing issues within the OSS community.

All i know is that it a project sponsered by Novell and has something to do with the agreement with Novell and MicroSoft. other than that i dont know anymore.
