Version 2.0.0.19: Loosing incoming emails?khm - January 7, 2009 - 1:32pm
If Thunderbird Portable is running, sometimes a new email is announced, but the marked email box or any other contains no new email. The marked email box is always the last box above local folder. Thanks, ( categories: )

What email protocol?
What email protocol are you using? Using IMAP, if you mark an email unread while not actually connected to the internet, when it gets a connection, it may see it as a new email and then automatically mark it as read again.
I've had funny things like this happen before.
email protocol: pop
Today I loose 16 emails. The for incoming emails marked folder is empty, and there are only one person which know this email address (and did not send a email), so it is impossible that any other can send emails to this address.
any filters?
do you have any filters set there?
such problem I have so far not met, so possibly you will have to give some more details how the mails were sent etc.

above local folder?
>The marked email box is always the last box above local folder.<
well if you use the pop, then the received mails go to the inbox, which is the local folder. If you have email box not local folder, then I think you are using imap?
>so it is impossible that any other can send emails to this address.<
well spammer manage very easy to send mails to *any* address , with *any* sender name and the whole world is still trying to stop that, still not fully successfully.
It is well possible that you receive kind of spam there and it is filtered somehow.

no filters
Server Setting: Server type : pop.
8 email boxes
1 local folder
I think the error appears after update to 2.0.0.19.
Can i overwrite this version with 2.0.0.18 without loosing my emails and settings?
Of course, i make a backup.
Thanks for replies.
should work
>Can i overwrite this version with 2.0.0.18 without loosing my emails and settings?<
should work, if you use the paf installer, nothing should be lost of the settings.
What I am still puzzled, you say you dont find mails in the mailboxes. But if you have server set to pop, then mails are going to land in the inbox, this is the local folder.
with the pop account, mails are simply called up and copied, or depending on the setting only the headers, to the inbox. Depending on the setting, such mails can be removed from the server or left there or have a time out of some days.
Sometimes I see similar effects when mails just get expired, but his is then normal.
Also your provider is taking care of some filtering for spam and might just delete the mail when it looks like being collected or so.
Also my TB shows any time when started an icon new mail, but there is no mail definitely on the server. When then the server is interrogated, the icon disappears.
This does not report new mails in fact, it is just some kind of reminder to check the mail server for new mails in the case this is done by the get mail button manually like in my case.
Did you check those mails also with other mail client for comparison?
In such cases I mostly access the pop server by telnet and see if the mails are really there, in the right order and if not any damaged mail on the server stopps all correct work of the communication.
remember: one damaged mail on the server might cut off your ability to retrieve any other mails from there.
So it is somehow not clear what you observe and what mails are lost.
Try to telnet to the server to port 110 and after entering user name and password, type LIST, this will give you the mails with the size listed. You can then delete each mail with DELE and the number of the mail on the list.
At the and you have to log out by QUIT, otherwise all trhe changes will not be done anyway.

No mail - just the "notifier"
I found that there no actual new mail - it was just the "notifier" that kept making sounds. I never did see the pop-up notifier box, just heard the sound.
I did all sorts of things like disabling auto-deletes, junk, rules, and other stuff. Made it keep logs and watched it closely.
When I manually logged into the usa (dot) com web site and cleaned it out, the false notifications stopped. I haven't seen (or heard) one since. I believe that there might have been a corrupted email that was never fully marked as "read".

it is
the original poster is complaining about new emails not showing up in his Thunderbird. He experienced the same and found a solution. In his case, it wasnt really new mail but just something wrong with the account which got fixed by logging in to the webmail interface and clearing it.
So I think yes it is relevant.

Well
hey i have had a problem with Thunderbird. the portable one and the one in my Linux Mint Distro. None will download anything anymore. this is most annoying. I have gone back to Gmails web mail now.
It all started when i upgraded to 2.0.0.19. now nothing works and Thunderbird is a dead program.
*edit* this is strange as Thunderbird has been a good app up until now. its so annoying as i prefer it to gmails webmail.

Not much
"It broke and it don't work no more" isn't giving us much to go on here.
What have you tried to do to fix the problem?

Heres what i can remember
I deleted and reset my account from scratch > nothing still not working.
went to gmails and reset the email pop 3 settings > again still nothing.
tried installing several older version of TB again > still nothing.
searched the web for help > nothing.
contacted gmail > still waiting on there response.
this is all I can remember so far. I may have done some other things.
Got I managed to get Linux Mint Local TB working now.
Y would the latest Portable version be causing emails to not download?
