Delphi

I will like to have some suggestion about installing delphi 7 on the key... it was easy ?

Delphi

This was too long to post here, i'll upload a txt file

I know it's a very 'dirty' install of it, but it runs perfectly :)
If someone could tell me maybe how to remove registry entries with the command prompt (so i could make a bat) i'd be apprechiated

Java?

How the hell did you get Java working on your stick? I so far thought it`s impossible to make Java work on a portable device. If it`s true, that`d be true magic. Impatiently waiting for a How-To. Thanks

FreeMind - portable

Thank you for your post. I am new to portable apps and as a teacher am just beginning to discover its potential in my work. I often use several machines and thus a USB with settings on is a godsend. So far it's just NVU and OpenOffice.

I noticed you have FreeMind on yours - but when i tried to install it it didn't claim to be USB portable. Assuming you have no problems i'd be grateful if you could explain why.

I'm just building a website and using eMindMaps. I would like to try FreeMind but am unsure about its portability.

thanks

File Compressors

7-Zip has the best compression, when you compress files into the 7z format I use 100zip for generic zipping and unzipping and use infozip when I can't use a GUI. As far as password protection non of those have it built in. I generally compress the file then encrypt it using dscrypt.

Better than infozip

Hi Microchipcowboy,

there are much better (=produce smaller zips) cmd-zipper than info-zip:

the best I found are kzip by Ken Silverman and 7-zip (7za.exe) by Igor Pavlov.

Using zipmix by Ken Silverman and archives made with these options:

kzip.exe /r archive1 directory
7za.exe a -r -tzip -mx=9 -mm=deflate -mfb=258 -mpass=10 archive2 directory
zipmix.exe archive1 archive2 archive

you could get even some smaller ZIPs.

I took the Portable Apps Suite from this site and added a bunch of apps from PortableFreeware.com. The whole collection takes up about 500MB of my 1 Gig drive. For details, or to download it, go to http://www.theinfobox.com/index.php/Portable_USB_Apps

I made the entire collection available as a download via BitTorrent and it also available as a direct download courtesy of Ryan Duff.

Many of your not portable

Many of your not portable application you list here are reputed to be portable. For example, why do you say that Foxit PDF Reader is not portable ?

hundred of portable applications:
http://standalone.atspace.org/index.html

Depends upon what "portable" means

Sorry for the delay. I don't count an application as portable if it writes to the Registry and leaves behind Registry entries once it's closed. Foxit, for example, writes configuration data at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Foxit Software\Foxit Reader. So while it would surely work portably, in the common sense of the word, it leaves remnants of itself behind and, apparently, one would be unable to keep one's settings across computers without a workaround such as mine.

registry stuff

Is it conceivable that most any program could get modded in this way so it could work portably? If so, how do you know what registry keys are being used?

    NetStumbler

Is your netstumbler truly portable? If so, how did you get it this way? It seems like there is not an easy way to make this program portable, but it would be extremely cool if it was.

    Unfortunately no....

...it is not truly portable. It stores its settings in the registry, however there are only seven settings it stores, so I used a batch file to add them to the registry and then remove them from the registry on closing the program. No mess left behind, and it allows me to use it when I need it.

    but wait

doesn't having all those apps cause your USB drive to have fewer read/write cycles? that would be a bad thing, right? i just got a 1GB USB drive and i'm not putting anything one until i'm sure it won't cause it to die within the next 5 months...

You should be ok with many...

Newer drives are pretty good about balancing writes across the whole drive. Reads aren't a big deal. What matters are writes.

    Live with purpose.

    what?

i have never heard of that. putting files on it shouldnt mess up your drive, think of it as being a portable hard drive, when you write to your hard drive you dont really kill it...

to tell you a comparison i have a 512 mb drive which is almost all full and i have been putting things on and off of it a lot and it is still same size as it was 3 months ago (of cource when you format the drive you would have a little less than 512, or whatever your size is, but not significantly or pernamently. if you were to "unformat" and delete everything etc. till it was back to factory setting it would be the original size).

i wouldnt expect to see any change in the drive quality unless you write at least 1 thousand times, i am not a professional but i think it is safe, why have a drive if you wont use it?

I haven't got a lot of apps. If you have any suggestions for any apps that you think anyone should really have, let me know.

Here is a list of whats on my Pretec Tiny 1 GB. I figured the list was a little too long for a post within the forum, so to save on space here's the list in html:

    Freeomz Price 91

The only non programs in there are the registry entries for those that require them, the GMail file system install for people that want it, and screensavers for those that want the same. :) Not everything is completely portable, but thats what uninstall entries are for ;) . Makes about 731 MB Programs folder alone, but it seems that my USB is more of a tool than a data transfer device. :P

    Whats On Lists.

I just wanted to know... It seems that everybody has these huge lists of apps that just keep getting longer and longer...... With multiple apps doing exactly the same thing. I thought "portable apps" was all about portability, efficiency and size limitations....

Is this topic turning into one of those.... "my list is longer than yours"????

    Aussie_USB
    Ever used USB "downunder"?

    Aussie_USB
    Ever used USB "downunder"?

I am not sure about everyone else...

But I use all the apps on my list, if they are doubled, they are for a reason. There are some that are not truly portable, but I like them and I make them portable through batch files. Minus OpenOffice all my apps take a grand total of 85mb on my 1gb drive. Every program I add, I UPX and delete uneeded files to make them as small as possible.

    "Not truly Portable"

Unfortunately, I too must work with apps that are not "truly portable". But we all must live in the real world. I suppose one good thing that "not truly portable" apps have taught me is the difference between centimeters and inches!!! That is one setting that ALL APPS SEEM TO FORGET or STORE IN THE REG!

    Heh. Not at all. Sometimes

Heh. Not at all. Sometimes when life actually slows down, I'm testing mulitiple programs at once.
First to see if they are portable, with or without modification.
Second, how they compare to their cousins. Thats the reason for some of the "footnotes" you see in the list. Besides, isn't this list thread more of an information/ideas thing?

    Portable Firefox - Browser
(With FireFTP, Sage, Gestures, and foXpose)
    Portable Gaim - IMer
    Portable Thunderbird - E-Mail
    PSPad - Text Editor
UltraVnc Viewer - Remote Desktop Client (With launcher script to remove registry settings)

    True Crypt - Encryption
    CruzerLock 2 - Encryption
Aqua Data Studio - SQL Query/Server Management
    Portable Gimp - Image Editing

I have to be careful not to encrypt anything in TrueCrypt that I'm going to need access to on a computer without admin rights. I really wish there was a solution for that.

    proxy server

I have been using a proxy server with Fire Fox on my USB to get around the tight controls on the can and can not view internet sites at work. Seems I can go anywhere and do anything although I am be low key as I am not sure what the network gurus can see.

    1GB USB Drive

Been playing around with a lot of apps to see what I can carry around with me... so here's the updated list:

    Audacity -- Excellent audio editor
DevCPP -- IDE for programming C++
DiskCleaner -- Get rid of unnecessary files!
FastStone Image Viewer -- Image Viewer
Fixit Reader -- Super fast PDF viewer
GhostView -- Postscript (*.ps) file viewer / printer
IP Messenger -- For x-fering files around at work
    Microburner -- CD Burner
MultiDesk -- Small & fast virtual desktop manager
PDP++ -- Very powerful Neural Network simulator (I still have to learn how to use this one)
    Portable AntiVir -- Anti Virus
    Portable AbiWord -- Word processor
    Portable Firefox -- Web
    Portable Gaim -- Instant Messenger
    Portable Thunderbird -- E-mail
    RegSeeker -- Registry Cleaner
ShotGenius -- Screenshot program -- very small!
    Spybot S&D -- Excellent Anti-Spyware program
    ThoughtManager -- Outlining software (commercial)
    uTorrent -- BitTorrent software
VNC -- Remotly control another machine
WinMerge -- Lets you compare contents of two ascii files
    WinRAR -- File Compression
WS_FTP -- Free (for academic use) FTP program (version 95)
    XMPlay -- Audio Player (MP3s!)

That just about does it for all my needs! Oh yes, I'm also using

    TrueCrypt

for USB security. Works pretty well!

    512MB USB drive

UPDATED ON 3/18/06...decided to go with OpenOffice instead of AbiWord (nothing wrong with AbiWord, but just needed the other apps in OpenOffice...would keep both if I had a 1 GB drive), and deleted Spread32 and PowerPoint viewer. Added some other stuff.

On my 512 MB SanDisk USB drive, I have the following:

    "OFFICE"
    Portable OpenOffice
(minus its help files, sound files, templates, and non-English dictionaries, and the "Python-Core" directory (John H. said this directory is coming out of v2.0.2) to yank about 40 MB out...put a help file (PDF) from OpenOffice.org on thumbdrive that was only 1.4 MB ...check out http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/ )

CruzerLock (For SanDisk USB drives only...TrueCrypt is an alternative)

Some of the programs have multiple language packs and I trim those out to save a little space. Also formatted the USB as FAT32 instead of FAT (not NTFS because I want to be able to read it from non-NTFS computers), which saved some more room.

Tried UPX (a graphical version) on the exes, but many were already compressed (like John H.'s "Portable..." files, except for Firefox, which I left alone after what John said) or wouldn't compress. ClamWin, TightVNC, and Media Player Classic will fail if compressed. Several programs did compress though.

Last but not least, back up your entire USB drive to a hard disk once you have it setup how you like it. I did this just one week before my previous USB drive croaked and it saved a ton of time.

    A couple changes

Went back to XnView instead of IrfanView because when you strip these both down to no plugins (or extra language files, etc.), XnView is about 1.5 MB (no help file though) versus about 0.9 MB for IrfanView, but XnView "light" opens more formats than IrfanView "light." I do prefer the fully loaded IrfanView for my desktop PC however.

Also, went from "Notepad2" to "Notepad++" for more features.

Apps on my 512Mo cruzer Micro

    Lads,

currently I am wroking (trainee) at a local ngo in nature and landscaping.

I have my usb 521Mo with me all the time cause I do not have a real workplace here, so have to lend ones pc ones in wile.

Most is taken by my Doc's and Oo.o

    80GB Western Digital Passport

I *LOVE* This portable Hardrive. No need for a power outlet. It's powered by the USB port. My old ones need power. Plus the small form factor (Smaller than a paperback book.) Great for School and my Backpack. Picked it up about 4 Months ago. Saw the thread for them here, too, and smiled at that.

Anyways, it's easier to post screenies of my P-Start, because there are THAT MANY. Heh. And it doesnt even list everything I use. @_@

Plus Several TV Rips (I love my tuner card, how did I live without it?)

And 10GB of MP3s. I ripped EVERY ONE of my cd's (plus some stuff from friend on the sly.)

Plus a bunch of documents and programming projects from classes.

Yeah, it gets some use. :)

And I'm happy it does. I don't know how I survived before I found the old sites John hosted PFF & PTB from. Nor do I know how I survived with a dinky 1 GB FlashDrive.

    more usb drive apps

Am enjoying reading everyone's lists of their favorite applications. Gives me some new ideas of what to try. Thought I'd share what I usually take with me to work. I don't necessarily run them off the usb drive, although most of them would probably work from there.

    Infozip's zip and unzip programs
grep - Borland's command line compiler has a nice version of this search utility
less - it's better than more
    kzap - DOS hex editor
hjsplit - file splitting and concatenating utilities
deltree - (from FreeDOS) in case the machine no longer has this useful DOS command line utility that allows deleting more than just one file at a time

    Favorite editors:
    edwin - a DOS editor
I used to use this with the clockon utility, so I could see the time in the corner of the editor.
    Sometimes I also use:
pedit - a DOS style editor that's Windows aware
nano - DOS, Win32 console or Linux editor
    Favorite Windows editor:
PFE - not portable, but earlier versions used an ini file to transfer settings and even the last version could be pointed to it
Scite - another nice programming editor that's more portable than PFE and I'm trying to switch over to

I found the command line utilities prn2file and redir useful for redirecting printer and screen output.

Also, f-prot is a nice DOS virus scanner.
If I don't have a decent e-mail client at work, I like foxmail because it's compact and still easy to use. It still uses the registry, but you can copy all the files in your foxmail directories over and all your mail and set up information goes with it.
