The fade is smooth and takes less than one second on all platforms and systems I have tested it on, even with integrated graphics and lesser cards. The only time I've seen it have issues is when used over remote desktop in which case it is recommended you disable the fading.
If you add a line reading FadeMenu=False to your PortableAppsMenu.ini within your PortableApps\PortableAppsMenu\Data\ directory, it won't fade in and out. It'll just appear and disappear.
If you aren't using remote desktop, you may be using something else which is attempting to stay on top or has an invisible window partially overlaying the area where the menu is trying to fade that has a slow repaint time. Something like ObjectDock or a similar tool would come to mind. Some desktop widget engine could interfere, too.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
As noted in another thread, I am using Hybrid Graphics (new infrastructre) and for most things it is very good, stable and works well for general purpose computing such as browsing and so forth, ie no blockiness in redraws.
This was the reason I went this way instead of traditional SLI.
What I think is happening is due to the fact of there being no substantial methodology for systray functions such as minimize and so-on, that whatever bodgy hack a programmer can come up with it works, albeit in a very poor perfoming way.
My hope of course is that the new Windows 7 will have genuine methods to access the kind of functions required for proper task minimisation and removal from the tasklist as daemon but maybe that is a bit of a pipe dream so I suppose what I am saying is it's not your fault.
