I always thought it wouldn't work but maybe thats a firefox limitation...

Firefox supports pause and resume. Look at your download manager sometime

Have you tried the DownloadThemAll plugin?
For Firefox - here:
http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/downthemall_extension
It can pause and resume, but even better, it REALLY does speed up the downloads dramatically.
I use it to download every portable app. It saves me SOO much time!
