I found at Tafe (study) I can

I found at Tafe (study) I can use Pidgin by opening up Firefox Portable and setting the proxy in there then open Pidgin and changing the network settings to use environmental settings. However this doesn't work at work so not a complete solution. Hope it helps though.

Interesting

But as most people use portable pidgon and Amsn on multiple computers that cant work like you say it cant on your work comp.

I wish there was a plugin for this.

Same here

Your corporate network/firewall is most likely blocking it. Even if I enter the proxy settings, it doesn't work.

Can you access Gmail Chat, for instance? That's just one example. I can't access that though my Firefox works fine for everything else.

There might be ways around it, but if it's not working even with the proxy settings, it's likely that they specifically do not want you using an instant messenger. Even if your immediate supervisor doesn't care, IT are usually operated by a company's executive branch, so in most cases if they complain to their bosses about someone's computer habits, what their boss and their boss's boss say about them usually doesn't amount to much.
