Does it actually fix anything, or just ICQ?

It looks like ICQ was fixed in 2.5.5. In the new version, there are fixes for IRC, MSN, XMPP and Yahoo. Take a look at the official Pidgin Changelog if you want to know more.

One thing that caught my eye

One thing that caught my eye was Fix various crashes on exit in libpurple (one of the core libraries). Don't know if anybody else was getting those, but mine crashed all the time on exit, so I'm excited to see the new release. Smiling

that happened whenever I used the right-click -> Exit on the tray icon. It just crashed

Another thing I found personally annoying and that is when you set a personal or "friendly" message and change status the message text doesn't stay.
