Firefox Portable - Facebook / Google Reader issuesmithj33 - August 8, 2009 - 11:22am
I am using FF portable at work and when I open Facebook, all the posts are squished together. Google Reader won't load any of my feeds. It just get stuck on Loading at the top of the page. I'm not sure if this is a Java or Flash type issue. Both sites work fine when I use FF Portable at home. Thanks ( categories: )

Just wondering, but are you
Just wondering, but are you able to open those websites with the local web browser on your work system?
Yes I am. FF portable isn't
Yes I am. FF portable isn't picking up the version of java installed on the machine, so I am thinking it has to do with that. Any ideas?
Java Portable
Just out of curiosity, have you got Java Portable installed? I'm not sure if Firefox is set to detect and utilize it or not, as it was intended for apps that rely specifically on Java, but ideally Portable Firefox should be utilizing it. In theory.
Do you (or anyone) know if Java puts a .dll or whatever in the plugins directory? If so, it's just a matter of copying it to your FirefoxPortable\data\plugins directory.
I just tried to access Facebook, and the main page looks fine. I used to have an account a couple years ago, but quit because I didn't like the service. Not sure what I can get to not being a member (read: not having an authenticated session) but as I said, main page is OK. Same with MySpace. (Have an account for that one, but not logging into it from work, which oddly enough doesn't have either of them blocked...)

Can't use Java Portable
Firefox Portable can't use Java Portable. A fix has been requested somewhere in the Mozilla Matrix, but at the moment there's no way it can know where to look for it.

Um... This has been bugging
Um...
This has been bugging me for a long time but... why don't launchers just set up environment variables?
Siggys waste Bandwidth... that's why I have one.
Won't Help
The Firefox Java plugin will ONLY use the Java that is registered in the registry key within HKLM\Software, which means it requires admin rights to modify. The issue is with the Java plugin itself and the launcher can't fix that.
