Anyone doing NaNoWriMo?

Just wondering, because I heard about National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) last year, and it was intriguing, and it came up this year (on wikiHow), and I think I just might do it. I got 2 weeks to think of a basic plot, but the rules say you can't actually start writing until the 1st of November, 12:01AM (00:01 international) local time.

If you're not familiar with it, it's a challenge to write a novel -- more accurately, a novella, entirely in the month of November. While there are no penalties or ways of discovering the various cheating techniques you may be thinking of, there's no actual prize for reaching the goal, aside from pride. They generate you a PDF certificate that says you did it and you get a badge on the forums. So it's no big deal, but then, it also costs nothing, and the site is run on donations.

They do count your words, but they don't keep your submission at all. They just use a script to verify it's 50,000 words, and in case you're embarrassed by it (e.g. you wrote an adult novel), they tell you how to translate it to gibberish in both MS Word and OO.o Write without affecting the word count, before submitting it.

There's no rules, no restrictions, and they have a community where you can be dared to write about various challenging plots or plot elements. Basically it looks like a lot of fun.

As for its relevance here -- well, I'll be using Portable Firefox and Wiki on a Stick to do it, so it'll all be portable software, for what that's worth. And if it's convenient to do so, I'll give PA a shout-out. And when it's done, win or lose (again, victory's only defined by reaching 50,000 or more words in the 30 days), I'll post it on my site. Well, a zip archive containing the text of it, for convenience.

//edit: No shout-out to PortableApps, but not because I don't want to. I decided not to do my time-travel story I really didn't have planned out to start with. I'm doing something that's been kicking around in my head, takes place in medieval times on an "Earth-like" world. So, no computers. However, if anyone wants to follow my progress, I think you can do so without needing to be logged in by pulling up my account over there, by clicking here. That'll show how many words I have logged -- and I update it every time I take a break (which is probably more often than I should).

Have you given Geany text editor a look? I have been playing around with Puppy Linux, and it has Geany as a text editor. Not sure if it has a Windows version, but I think Geany has a character and word counter in the tools menu. You might check it out, if your interested.

Thanks, but...

Thanks, but not gonna use a text editor, I'm gonna use a portable wiki in Portable Firefox.

Notepad++ has a word counter in its tools menu (via a plugin) but thanks anyway!

Also, just found out my wife's doing NaNoWriMo too. Just found out last night. Mind = blown. She does have an idea, said that movie The Invisible that came out a few years back is kind of like her idea.

I Tried it.

I tried to NaNo last year but I only made 500 words Sad . This year I didn't even start because of school Shock . I found the best program to use for NaNaWriMo is Open Office because of the multiple pages and word count.

Load the App and Play
