OpenOffice 3.1 Writer (and more) does not start from USB stick

Submitted by Westender on October 28, 2009 - 5:21pm

Hi there,

something strange happens: on a usb stick of a friend of mine, OpenOffice 3.1 Writer does not start. Even Calc doesn't do so.

There is no splash screen. The only thing you see is in the task manager. There I can see the two processes "soffice.bin" and "soffice.exe", but after a few seconds, they both disappear.

Is there some sort of log file, where I could check, what went wrong? Are there maybe some known incompatibilities, I should have a look for?

The same thing applied for the previous version 3.0.1. My first thought was: oh, the usb stick could have a problem, so re-install the old version - no change in behaviour. After that, I changed to 3.1, but again, the software won't start.

Any help is appreciated. Where should I look for? What information do you need in addition?

Install path

Where are you installing to? A good check to start with is to make sure that you haven't installed it any deeper than F:\PortableApps\OpenOfficePortable - just about any longer and it won't work due to path length problems.

As far as I remember, i didn't install it any deeper. And I'm quite sure about that, but just to be 100% sure, I have to check this out. I'll call my friend so he can check that and tell me...

Okay, I checked it: it was

Okay, I checked it: it was not installed any deeper than F:\PortableApps\OpenOfficePortable.

I told my friend to test it with the same stick on another computer. Maybe there is something on his laptop, which prevents OpenOffice from working there.

Feedback poll?

I noticed something similar when I tried OO Portable on a different computer. It tried to pop open window asking if I wanted to take a feedback poll. I only learned that later, though. Smiling I wondered why it wasn't opening, then went into the processes and killed whatever was OO related. Next time, it fired up and showed me the poll, I closed it, and it didn't happen any more.
