1.0 installer crashesdavidhales - November 19, 2009 - 6:54pm
After downloading version 1.0 from: I double click on the file to install it and it asks what language to install. After clicking the okay button it crashes. The program goes no further. I am using Windows XP with SP3. What am I doing wrong? I have never had this problem before. I downloaded a previous version and it installed with no problems. Please help. ( categories: )

Language
I can't reproduce this. Which language? What drive letters are available on your PC? Where do you have your other portable apps installed (full path)?
UPDATE: I just confirmed that the download from SourceForge installs properly on my Windows XP SP3 test machine, so something else is afoot here.

Installer
I simply double click on the file SumatraPDFPortable_1.0.paf.exe on my desktop. Then install language comes up and says please select a language. I then choose English and click on the OK button.
Next Sumatra PDF Portable crashes. Error message says: Sumatra PDF Portable has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. It then says Please tell Microsoft about this problem. I can then click on either the Send Error Report button or the Don't Send button. Either way it does not install.
I am installing on the desktop which is located in the Documents and Settings folder on drive C. I install other portable apps the same way, only they install and work. I then copy them from the desktop to my usb drive. Other drive letters D for DVD/CDR-W drive and E for DVD Multi Recorder.
Any more thoughts on this?
Hmm
Can you try placing the installer in your C:\ root directory? Does your username have any special characters? Is Windows set to English?
Also, could you please try the new Google Chrome Portable installer running it from your desktop as well?

1.0 installer fix
My copy of Windows is set to English and my user name does not contain any special characters. I installed the latest google chrome portable and the installer worked perfectly. I placed the installer for Sumatra PDF Portable in the root of my C drive and it still crashed. So we are back to square one. Same problem and no fix.
Then I got to thinking. I tried one more time to get this installed and wow it worked perfectly. I do not know why, but it just worked. I copied the installer file to the root of my usb drive and then double clicked it to install it like I usually do to my desktop. There were no errors or crashes. It worked like a charm. Don't know why the installer would not just run from my desktop, but I finally got Sumatra PDF Portable 1.0 installed and working.
Good, but
That's good, but would you be willing to try a couple more things to see what the issue was? The first would be trying the Google Chrome Portable current installer from your desktop. We want to be sure this doesn't happen for anyone else.

google chrome installer
--> Glad to help out and make sure no one else has any problems.
1. Downloaded the google chrome installer to my desktop.
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/portableapps/GoogleChromePortable_3.0.1...
2. Double clicked on GoogleChromePortable_3.0.195.33_online.paf.exe to install google chrome.
3. Waited a few minutes for the files to download.
4. Double clicked on GoogleChromePortable folder.
5. Double clicked on GoogleChromePortable.exe to launch Google Chrom Portable version 3.0.195.33.
--> Program works perfectly with no crashes on the install.
Ok, one more
Ok, that means it's not just the 1.0 installer. Could you try this Sumatra PDF installer to see if it works from your desktop?

Thanks for helping with this david!

repack installer
The repack installer worked fine. No problems that I could tell. What did you change with the repack?
Final vs Pre
That was with the final 1.0 installer release whereas Sumatra Portable was built with one just prior. Could you try the original Sumatra Portable 1.0 again and confirm that it still crashes when run from the Desktop?

Final 1.0 Installer
Just tried the version one installer again from my desktop, but this time it worked. I have not changed anything. Why would it work this time and not before?
Reboot
Is it possible you rebooted the box between when it failed 4 times and now? If so, it would seem to be something else.

darn thing....
I have not rebooted since trying to install Sumatra PDF 1.0. I have also not installed any other new programs or updated any existing programs.
Hmm
Well, if you can get it to happen again or figure it out, please let us know. If anyone else experiences this, please post. Otherwise, with only a single report that's not longer reproducible, I think we may call it "one of those things".

Installed fine
I installed v1 fine without any issues (on Win XP and not to the "default" (root?) location either)
Corrupt download maybe?
Download...
Downloaded version one four times and it crashed on install every time.
Downloaded version two once and it worked perfectly.
Thanks for your concern Darkbee.
