FreeOTFE

For drive protection, try FreeOTFE Portable and FreeOTFE Explorer Portable.
Check the https://portableapps.com/node/22143 for links to download and see the documentation. It will encrypt your entire drive (or a part of it), and the files will not be accessible without either FreeOTFE or FreeOTFE Explorer.

If you mean just encrypting some of your files, but not the whole drive, try Toucan and 7-Zip Portable.

For keeping your passwords secure, please try KeePass Portable.

Cheers

In addition...

And if you mean password protecting an entire Flash drive (or even just a folder) then AFAIK there is no portable software solution. This is something that would have to be managed by the hardware of the Flash drive itself, and even then you're not guaranteed that it would work correctly on every computer you used.

needs

Most/all software password apps require machines that grant Administrator Rights to users. Most public machines don't do that.

So are there password apps, yes. Will they meet your situation, you will have to decide.

Yes and NO

Your post is both correct and wrong. Most software/programs that password protect a partition must have administrator privileges in order to run. However, FreeOTFE Explorer works fine with no such privileges. That's why it was created! There are some drawbacks for the Explorer version, such as you can only create Volumes up to 4GB in size, and they can be only FAT or FAT32 formated, but then again, flash drives mostly are FAT file systems to begin with! Second drawback of the Explorer version of FreeOTFE is that programs can not be run from a partition mounted through it, but if he wants to hide and protect files, it is a perfect solution.

Summary:
Advances of FreeOTFE Explorer:
- no admin rights needed and works on all Windows machines
- nobody can see what is stored inside the Volume until it is mounted with a password
- leaves no registry, or any other data behind

Drawbacks of FreeOTFE Explorer:
- Volumes can be only up to size of 4GB (it's because of FAT file system format)
- Volumes can only be formated as FAT or FAT32 systems
- Programs can not be run from a volume mounted through it.

In the end, as you said, to each his own. I agree with that, not all software works good for everybody. But I just wanted to point out that the problems are not that grave. If you want to password protect files, and that nobody even knows they are there, use the Explorer and you'll be fine. If you want to password protect the entire drive and run programs from it, FreeOTFE and TrueCrypt might be the solution, but they both do need administrator privileges...

EDIT: Scratched my mistake for 4GB max volume size with FreeOTFE Explorer...

Probably Not

There is no way to implement encryption without going to a hardware level (which would lock down PortableApps--not a good thing) or getting admin rights (which goes against the definition of a Portable App).
I added a little password dialog to my launcher app just for fun. Obviously this would not protect me at all if my drive gets stolen from all but the stupidest of people. It would not at all help me if somebody wanted access.
