Application: Ares Disclaimer: This was not developed in so you can do stuff illegally with it. By installing, you agree you will not violate the state/federal law. Download Ares Portable Development Test 5 Release Notes June 26, 2010: More debugging... June 23, 2010: I did a bunch of debugging. I hope I fixed all the errors. I recommend you delete your AresPortable folder before installing, the old files in your Data folder get mixed up with your new install, and you'll get some problems. I haven't had a chance to test it on multiple computers, but I did test it on different accounts and it seemed to work fine. June 18, 2010: Fixed bug where it doesn't remember where you choose to save your downloads folder. Also, if you choose to save downloads to the default location, that will be copied into your Data\Local Settings\My Shared Folder, so you won't have to worry about saving stuff directly to your drive. YES!
It's working good! I'll let you know if I come across any other problems. Thanks!
Problems
I´m having lots of problems with this. It seems to be corrupting its files. As an example, yesterday I couldn't connect. I checked the drive for errors and found cross-linked files in the AresPortable directory, which were repaired. I deleted the AresPortable directory, and reinstalled. I was able to connect and search, no problem. I shut down the program, checked for errors again. No problems found. Today, I try again. Unable to connect. I let it sit connecting for 10 minutes, no go. Shut down the program, , checked for errors, and found all kinds of cross linked files, again in the AresPortable directory. This has been happening repeatedly. It works fine on installation, and until the drive is ejected, but the next time I run the program, it simply will not connect, and then corrupts itself.
that dosn't sound too good
let me look into it and I'll get back to you soon.

While it works, it works
While it works, it works good. I´m downloading right now. But I´m gonna keep playing with it and see if I can't determine the conditions that cause this problem. I love stress testing programs!
Okay, this is messed up! At
Okay, this is messed up! At the time I wrote the prior notes today, I had just reinstalled it. It was working fine. I even shut down ares, ejected the drive, reinserted it, and loaded Ares, which continued to function. After downloading several files, I clicked on disconnect, then Quit Ares, shut down my other apps, and ejected the drive. I just inserted in another computer, started Ares, and it happened again...it said Connecting for 5 minutes, but never connected. I clicked on Disconnect to stop the connection process, Quit Ares, then checked for Errors. The Ares.reg file and AresPortable\Data\settings\Local Settings\Data first allocation units were truncated. After fixing, just for grins, I started ares again. Same results, but even more files corrupted. Again, delete and reinstall, and it works.
No problems any where else on the drive. Always in AresPortable. Hope all this gives you something to help find the problem.
Another problem (minor, I hope)
The machine I'm using right now already has Ares installed. So AresPortable defaults to the installed Ares download folder. I've changed it 3 times now, and every time I restart, it defaults back to using the Ares folder on the hard drive.
hmmm
I think I know whats happening... I'm going to upload a newer version today. I apologize for the errors.

Not a problem
Like I said, I enjoy trying to find the bugs in stuff. Just wish I knew how to write software.
"Just wish I knew how to
"Just wish I knew how to write software."
Me too.

Updated to Dev Test 3
man, I was this close to giving up on it *he holds his thumb and index finger a millimeter apart* This close, but I found the [suspected] error and fixed it.
if you are upgrading from a previous installation, please delete the old fodler before upgrading, or the launcher will get mad.

I'll play with it over the next couple of days and let you know what happens. (crossing fingers, waving dead chickens , etc)

Still some wierdness
Okay, the file corruption issue "seems" to be fixed, but somethin' still ain't right. On first run after installation, everything seems okay. But since I have to use machines with XP in Spanish, AresPortable automatically starts in Spanish. I change the language and the download directory to point to the flash drive. I have to restart to make Ares "see" the downloads in progress. On restart there are no longer any "skins". Not an issue for me, but maybe for others. Also, after moving to another machine, I was unable to connect...the same type problem as before, but after shutting down and retrying there isn't any (obvious) file corruption. But after deleting and reinstalling and reconfiguring it's working. I´ll see what happens the next few times I use it.
Updated to Dev Test 4
sorry for the constant updates...

Don't apologize
This is what Beta test is all about. Look at it this way...you have someone who is willing to test the app and report any errors or problems that pop so that you as the portable developer can fix the problems, and all in order to (hopefully) end up with a stable portable app. I enjoy testing apps like this. I did Windows 98 Beta testing years ago, so I know it sometimes takes a few revs to get things right. And I want to thank you for the work you're doing porting Ares to a portable form.
yeah
but I feel like I check the code a billion times, I test it a billion times, it seems to work perfect, then you report a bug. I test again, then I see this bug, that when I tested seemed to be nonexistent, but somehow you reporting it made it come out of its hiding place, I see the code, and, somehow, I notice a careless mistake of forgetting to put the word "data" and that threw the whole thing off. I mean that makes me mad. It seems like Ares has something against me or something that it doesn't want to be made portable, I don't know.
And as well as this has been going, I might as well call it a "pre-alpha"
And even that seems like an over statement.
Ah well, at least this is gonna give me experience...

Well, here we go again
The skins problem is gone, but it seems the connecting issue still exists. About 2 1/2 hours ago, I downloaded rev 4, deleted rev 3 & installed rev 4. started it up, first changed language, shut down & restarted. The skin was still in place. Changed download directory, restarted, still no problems. Downloaded a whole S**t load of stuff, no problem. But the Internet cafe I was using was closing, so I shut down, checked the drive for errors (none), ejected the drive, and left. I´m now in another Internet cafe, started Ares, and the darn thing won't connect. And it seems that when I moved to another computer, the default download directory defaulted back to the C: drive. Hmmmm. Curiouser and curiouser.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, it gets even weirder. I shut down Ares, and restarted. It saved the download directory from before, but but even though it showed English as language, everything was in Spanish. Shut down, checked for errors (none) restarted. Now in English, connected, downloading, but reverted to Basic appearance, and no skins listed.
Today, I started Ares on
Today, I started Ares on another machine, and the download directory had reverted to the C drive, and it won't connect. The other changes in config DID stick, ie language, nickname, etc. And no cross-linked or truncated files. I'm gonna delete and reinstall and try in several machines today and see what happens.
=======================================================================
Okay, after deleting and reinstalling and reconfiguring it was working fine. I had to shut down for an hour and a half to teach a class, came back to the same Internet Cafe, same machine, and it won´t connect. However, all the configuration settings, skins, etc. have remained. But I'm not sure about the connection issue right now because ALL net access is **extremely** sluggish right now.
hmm
I'm beginning to think that this may be a problem with the way the app is built... I was wondering if you could run the same tests you run on my app, but on this one (neither of them are mine, but I want to see if its a problem with my launcher or the app itselg):
http://www.mediafire.com/?snygtt2tdgm
http://www.mediafire.com/file/zy1qmziqgea/AresPortable_2.1.5.paf.exe
I'd do it myself, but I don't think I could test it exactly how your testing it
Thanks.

Heh...
Sure. I'll let you know what happens in a couple days
Okay, just a quick note here.
Okay, just a quick note here. This is really for myself more than anything else.
I now have your package which is Ares 2.1.5, plus the other 2 you pointed me to. One of these is Ares 2.0.9 and the other is also 2.1.5. For the sake of clarity I´ll refer to the 2.1.5 versions as Dev and Test 4 (Test 4) being yours.
Installed 2.0.9, and configured on first run. Restarted, and on start it shows "Connecting" but never switches to "Connected". However, It began downloading pending files in the download directory, and allowed me to Search for new media. I also like that this version still has the Internet Browser window enabled, which later versions do not have.
Installed 2.1.5 dev, and configured on first run, and restarted. I noticed that on first run, default download directory was G:\Documents\Downloads which does exist, but is NOT what I want, so I changed to G:\PortableApps\Documents\Ares Downloads. On restart (and subsequent restarts) always defaults back to G:\Documents\Downloads. I don´t really like this, but for now I'll start a download there just so I can see what will happen as I test this version.
Deleted the installed Test 4, and reinstalled. I wanted to start with all new installations. I'm going to be playing with all three versions over the next couple of days, trying on different machines, etc.
Second day of test
Testing on same machine as yesterday, in Internet Cafe, on machine with program installed similar to Deep Freeze.
2.1.5 Test 4 - Same old same old. On start, says connecting. Twenty minutes later, still connecting, can't search, and on transfers page just says searching or connecting, but can't find users with files selected for download yesterday, so therefore unable to continue downloads.
2.1.5 dev - Started and connected almost instantly, and continued download started yesterday.
2.0.9 dev - Started and like yesterday it says connecting, but now doesn't find anything in search (I'm using the search term ¨guns¨ which should pull up over 1500 hits). However, since I am using the same download directory as 2.1.5 test 4, 2.0.9 IS continuing the pending downloads.
I'm going to try some additional tests, specifically with 2.0.9 and 2.1.5 dev. I want to see what configs I can change, and see what seems to stick and what doesn't
thanks
i really appreciate it!
[username] [at] gmx [dot] us
On the 2.1.5 dev version,
On the 2.1.5 dev version, everything including chat seems to be working, except for the ability to change the default download directories.
I'll try again tomorrow and see if everything stays the same or if there are any changes.
Okay, now the 2.0.9 dev is
Okay, now the 2.0.9 dev is working EXACTLY like yesterday. It doesn't say it's connected, but it is. Did a search for ¨guns¨and found 1300+ files, and it's downloading from yesterday. The 2.0.9 seems to allow and save all the config changes I've made. Hmmm. I´m gonna give the 2.1.5 dev another shot. see what happens.
=========================================================================
Okay, the chat function doesn't seem to work. No big deal for me. I'm not really into chat.
Okay, so far the only one
Okay, so far the only one that has ¨broken¨ has been yours. Sorry bout that. Anyway, the other 2 versions work just fine (except for no chat and no confirmation of connection in 2.0.9). I don't know what is different between yours and theirs. Since none of them is a release version yet, maybe take a look at the other 2.1.5 dev and see if you cant fix the problem with the directory choice, or get with the person who did it and see about working together. Because as far as I can tell, that seems to be the only real glitch with it.
ok
I'll compare/contrast the code and come up with a new version today/tomorrow.

Upgraded to dev test 5
see release notes for changes.
[username] [at] gmx [dot] us
Okay
I'll give it a try over the weekend and see how it does.
Sorry dude
Back to the drawing board. This one doesn't save ANY changes. Every time I start it, all settings revert back to the defaults, and changes like nickname and age disappear. I tried removing the Read-Only archive bit on the entire folder, changed settings and restarted, and it saved the settings, but lost all skins except Bloody. Shut down, checked disk for errors, restarted, and now all prior changes were lost, and still no skins. I'm gonna delete and reinstall and see what happens.
============================================================================
Nope. Deleted and reinstalled and no change. And this is without even unplugging the flash drive. The changes just don't stick.
Sorry about the problems so
Sorry about the problems so far. It might be a while before I can make some progress though. I don't have Internet at my house anymore. I'll get back to it as soon as I can.

Tranquilo
That's relax in Spanish. Whenever you can is cool.
Did you ever get Internet
Did you ever get Internet back at your house/ make further progress with this?
It's a great app but this save issue is driving me crazy.
nope
portable project's been dead due to the lack that it doesn't work. I restarted working on it with PAL, though. I've started and stopped and started again. I've found a few new stuff that it's leaving behind, and that's starting to bother me (read: it might not be able to be portable, but I'm not sure yet)
And the title refers to the internet (none in past 6 months).
