Windows Explorer Does Nothing When Trying to Open File in ZIP Archive Encrypted with AES

Bezalel - June 23, 2010 - 12:29pm

I have created one archive by encrypting PDF files with AES, and a second archive by encrypting with ZipCrypto. If I use 7-Zip to access either archive, they work fine.

However, if I use Windows Explorer (within XP Pro), I have a problem. When I try to access the archive encrypted with AES, it shows each file within the archive, but when I click on one of the PDF files, it does nothing. It doesn't prompt me for a password or open the file or anything. (Explorer properly accesses files in the archive encrypted with ZipCrypto.)

Any ideas?

Unsupported

Windows Explorer and some other outdated zip tools don't support anything buy ZipCrypto. If you encrypt something in AES, you need to use an unzip tool that supports it. Windows Explorer is not such a tool.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Thank you, that's important

Thank you, that's important to know. [And thanks for the very fast response!]

Windows Explorer

was given the ability to open unencrypted zip files. it is not full featured or full bodied. never has and never will be.
