Portable Firefox starts with regular Firefox settings

lschlesinger - April 18, 2012 - 2:22pm

After working right when I first installed it, I invoked Firefox Portable (on Windows 7) and found myself looking at what appeared to be my regular Firefox browser, based on the tabs I had open and other settings. I checked Task Manager, and it was really tbb-firefox.exe that was running. I searched the support site, and based on advice I found there I went into \Tor Browser\FirefoxPortable\Data\settings and renamed the FirefoxPortableSettings.ini file, then reran Firefox Portable, and it worked as expected. The next time I started it up, however, it went back to the settings of the desktop Firefox install, and seems determined to do that every time now. Any advice on how to keep it from switching personalities?

Unsupported

Tor Browser is not supported or authorized by PortableApps.com or Mozilla. It's modified using some unrecommended settings, so you'd need to ask the Tor folks.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

definitely wrong

>\Tor Browser\FirefoxPortable\Data\settings and renamed the FirefoxPortableSettings.ini file, then reran Firefox <

what ever you did here you spoiled it

1. as stated, the tbb-firefox is part of Tor bundle and is specially produced (aurora) for the needs of the work together with Tor and only for that purpose, for nothing else.

2. you should never run it on its own, this might well spoil it completely.

3. you should only start it with the launcher Start Tor Browser.exe
then you will see vidalia starting Tor and finally the browser will start and it will definitely have no plugins or any connection to the local machine firefox data.

4.use it only this way, do not try to install some plugins or similar, few extensions like dictionary may be OK. The special functions included in modifications there are only for use with Tor and may be often not convenient when used otherwise. Do not attempt to change those settings as this may well result in bypass of the Tor network.
Do not attempt to use this browser as your default browser.

5. if spoiled, delete the folder and get new copy from torproject.org, unpack it and use it as designed, but do not run single components of that package on their own.
